Poll: What are you paying for Cable/DSL?

Here in Canada, I'm paying $40 CAD which is like $25 US. I'm very broke right now, so I'm considering cancelling since I don't online game much anymore. And can someone remind me what its like to use dial-up?

You won't like it. If you thought dialup was slow before you will go insane now. Trust me. I have dialup for when my dsl fails (only happened twice) and i can't stand it.

I pay ~$42 after taxes, etc. for 1.5mbps service from Comcast@Home. Also
a Comcast Cable subscriber, otherwise the service would be $10 higher.

I could *never* go back to dial-up. I have to use it on the road when
I travel for business. Horrors.

I pay $39.95 a month for DSL. What would going back to dial up be like? Going from broadband to dial-up is like driving on the Autobahn and suddenly finding yourself on the freeway in L.A.

I pay $30.00 for AT&T Roadrunner here in the Boston area. I own the modem and am a cable subscriber, this is why it's cheap.

I could not go back to dailup, and any place I ever move to, would have to have broadband access; or I'd simply not use my computer anymore.

Broadband "normalizes" computer/internet; my computer feels more like an appliance (maybe a terminal even!) than a computer, because I do not have to jump through hoops to get online or to download anything I'd like.

Worth every penny!

I pay about $60 month (though I pay quarterly), for 768/768. My friend pays about $100 for 1MB/1MB.

Our cable ISP (RR) sucks here, to many subscribers in one small area. 4:00PM-11:00PM is hell, makes my online gaming life hell, or it did until I got DSL.

LOL...or in Hawaii (yes our small little island has traffic, though I think it?s more to do with the incompetence of our DOT). Two months ago I was in L.A., and I didn't think the traffic there was that bad, at least in my opinion. In Hawaii you'll come to a dead stop, in the middle of the highway for 20 minutes sometimes. It takes me more the 45 minutes to get home, and I live less then two miles away from work. Fridays are somtimes worst.

I pay about $100 every 2 months. That includes late fees, reconnect fees, processing, etc......
If I would pay it on time it would be about $40. Cox@home Cable.
I'm also pretty satisfies with the service. 384 up and 384 down I think. Havent complained once. 🙂

I pay $35 Canadian which is more like $20 for sympatico ADSL which is 1mbit down and 128 up. I feel sorry for you sux0rs in the USA! HAHA GO CANADA!

The only good things that's come out of Canada is ATI and Terrence & Phillips... I'm happy with my cable which is 4Mbits/128kbps for only $29.95.

Because of my distance from the nearest CO, I get to pay the wonderful sum of $65 a month for IDSL (144/144). Cable isn't available here either. Lucky me huh? Its ok though, it keeps my pings the same as any other DSL line for gaming and thats all I really want it for.

Oh, oh, ok..you wanna reminder about "what life is like with dial-up?" How about this; you know that nice fancy new program that came out yesterday; 3DMark2001? Mmm-hmm, 38 megabytes of pure visual candy....IT TOOK ME 4 1/2 HOURS TO DOWNLOAD IT!!! I AM SO JEALOUS OF YOU DARN BROADBAND PEOPLE!!!!

How's that for a reminder? I always connect at 33,600bps. No more, no less. The fastest I've ever downloaded is about 4.5KB/sec. Typically (last night) I download at a rock-steady and eye-popping 2.97kb/sec. Which is actually decent for dial-up. That would be fine if we were back in the days of Doom (1) where a "big file" was 2mb, maybe. These days a simple tweak utility is 10mb or more.

There is an upside though. I pay $10 a month with Everyone's Internet. Flat rate, unlimited, unmonitored access (AOL can kiss my *ss...parental guidance software my foot...ever heard of The First Ammendment, AOL?)

EV doesnt' offer DSL anymore. I'm thinking of going with Earthlink for for $40/mo. I won't ever get cable. Roadrunner is in my neighboorhood and if you use it at 0500, you get really fast speed. Between 1200-2400, forget it. You're lucky if you get 10k/sec. That's still 3x faster than my dialup, but hardly worth $50/month. I'm drinking milk and someday I'll be big and strong too and I'll have DSL! Bwahahahahahahaha!

MichaelD, you may want to reconsider the EarthLink/Verizon DSL. EarthLink is just a huge reseller. If your DSL line has a problem, you have to consult 2 or 3 different companies, waiting >20 minutes on hold each time. EarthLink sticks you with a 6 month contract, and early cancellation results in a fine of $125 (last time I checked).

The people in your area telling you about the cable could be lying to keep you off of their bandwidth, ever think of that? 😉 If you're going to go with DSL, do not go through a reseller, go straight to the telco.

$40 a month for 768/128 ADSL in Kirkland, WA. Been very happy since my actual connection is near 900k. I'm one of those lucky LPB's....hehehehe
