i cant see jack without my glasses/contacts, but i dont dare to wear contacts while swimming because i'm afraid what the chlorine might do to my eyes... my friend says she wears them when she swims, but is it safe to do so??

I wore contacts for 10 years (until I tried glasses at age 23 and realized that I can SEE with them ;)) and would go swimming frequently with them. I wore the semi-permeable, rigid type.

You can do this, but it's not advisable. For one thing, if you open your eyes while underwater, you're contacts are gone. I've worn goggles and contacts and have been able to look around underwater. In my view, it's best not to wear contacts unless you're going to wear goggles because even if you plan not to open your eyes underwater, something could startle you and suddenly your contacts will just leave. Now, if you wear thoe one a day contacts (or even the 2 week contacts), then it's probably worth the risk.

I've only gone swimming once since I got my contatcs (I have 20/400 vision, so if I take 'em out, I can barely see the water, seriously) The chlorine made them get sorta blurry, and I had to throw them out a few days later. Of course, I have the disposable 2 week contatcs, and I had been wearing these for around 3 weeks...

Wearing goggles should be fine, just as long as you don't get enough water in your eyes to flush your contacts out. Even if you feel that it's coming out it will stay in your goggles.

buy better goggles :p

i wear contacts and wear goggles when i swim. the one time i didn't, some crap got into my eye and i was scratching it the whole time i was in class. by the time i got home and took a look at my eye, there was some blood from the piece of dirt having been abraded against my eye while i was scratching.

hmmm your goggles shouldn't be leaking....

I've used contacts when swimming for 4 years @ 3 days a week and I have yet to lose a contact in the water.

just get good goggles and it works like a charm
