I got the free DL from Steam this morning. I fired it up but couldn't figure out how to set it up for my 1920x1200 monitor. I ran at 1600x1200 but it wasn't very smooth. I'll have to look into how to run it on modern HW.

What I did with Unreal Gold on mine (GOG version):-

1. Download the newest DirectX 10 renderer here and extract the contents of the "Unreal_266_Gold" folder into (Game Install Location)\System:-
http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/index.htm

2. Run the game and select DirectX10 (if you've already run it once and no longer get the first startup dialogue, then change the "Video Driver" under Options -> Prefs -> Video)

3. Select your resolution (1920x1080 was already shown as an in-game option on mine so I didn't need step 4)

4. If your resolution isn't shown in-game, quit and go into game install folder\System folder then edit Unreal.ini and change the relevant lines to:-

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
FullscreenViewportX=1920
FullscreenViewportY=1200

5. If you're using a 120Hz or higher monitor, then whilst you're still in Unreal.ini, remove the 100fps cap by raising:-
FPSLimit=100

More advice here including HD texture packs / skins, etc:-

Probably the biggest single performance upgrade I ever got out of a game, was with Unreal. Going from 16mb to 32mb RAM was like night and day. Going from the opening cave scene to the outside stuttered like crazy before, dropped to unplayable frames. Doubling the RAM was huge. Great game too. Comparing to multi seems silly to me. But I liked UT2003 the best. So many hours on that game.

I updated to the D3D 10 renderer and started playing through. So far I've remembered that the music really added to the ambiance and the monsters at the beginning aren't that bright. IMHO the visuals are still decent.

Unreal is my fav in the series because of the graphics and coop. Often had well over 20 players vs npc helping the new guys like me navigate the gameplay. Back in '98 on Voodoo 2 in sli.

Have to admit though the visuals in UT 2003 got lots of attention including mine. Those player models/skins such an advancement more than the landscape environment imo.

Played the hell out of unreal tournament, though to be honest, I like q2 deathmatch better.

I am thinking of buying unreal tournament 3 black on steam.
Are there still active servers left for this game ?
I really would like to play some unreal tournament again. It has been so long ago.
