If the choice came down to allowing the country to be propelled into the worst crisis since the Civil War with a totally unknowable outcome and deposing Trump in favor of two (comparatively tranquil) years of President Pence I don't see much of an option, even for them.

I didn't think Republicans see him as an option when Trump joined the primary. I didn't think they had much of an option when he won the primary. I have sense stopped believing that Republicans have even one foot in reality when it comes to Trump. I think that If they believe that they can convince even 45% of Americans that the New Civil War is Democrats fault they will happily watch the country burn while they all vacation in Europe.

It’s completely obvious what will happen. Trump is going to declare a state of emergency and setup a Constitutional showdown over executive powers.

The intent of this and the government shutdown is to throw the Democrat House majority off balance, and continue to solidify his base. Once he loses his base, the GOP leadership will turn on him. All of this is to prevent that from happening. Trump knows he survives if he sustains support from the Senate, and he won’t lose that support so long as he throws red meat to his base.

Since there's no demonstrable national emergency to any sane mind then same thing. Saying, 4000 terrorists, means nothing especially since the border isn't where they are coming.
