Poll: Too much "Free crap" in Hot Deals

Finally my topic is resurrected =)

I'm glad y'all agree...

Whether you're for/against the free stuff, seperating it makes sense because it lets both sides find what they want in a more convenient and organized manner...

I hope the Mods agree

it wouldnt be so bad if the people posting threads for free stuff didnt have to create a new thread every single damn time for each individual item. and they'll do 3+ threads at one time. this is as bad as all the people who should be posting in the technical help forum and not in the general hardware forum, clogging it up.

Ok now I understand wading through the free CR*P is kind of a bummer but I accually enjoy some of theme I have gotten a few Tshirts and some other stuff (Flash light, mouse pad, books ect.) Banning is not the way to go I enjoy this board because of it's knowledgible members and The best way is to set up a new forum ( ala Fatwallet) and do it that way. I like there set up over there but there seems to be a more active community over here. Just my $.02

There are really only a few offenders to the free crapola threads. Hmmm...ahhhhh...maybe they could be gently coerced into compliance. I suppose I'd rather see a condensed thread in Hot deals, perhaps once daily. It'd float to the top, as certain things always float to the top.

I say make a new Forum for Free Stuff so people can just open the forum and look down the list for the deals because.... if u just make a thread then some people will say "Thanks" or "Nice Find" or Some comment and then it will become a pain in the butt to find the next free thing... so its more of an advantage to give Free stuff a forum instead of thread. Some back me up =)

I agree with that Lig.....

However it's kinda sad that this site should have an entire forum for "crap"...

Eventually it would just become a home for scammers and it would take up a lot of the moderators time to monitor such a forum and they shouldn't have to...

IMHO just ban the free stuff worth less than $5/$10 and ban anyone who posts it...

There is no shortage of places to find crap like that and I think it hurts the feel and quality of the forums to host it... It's a "computer hardware discussion forum" (see the logo) and most of the deals are for hardware, electronics, and stuff we want to find for cheaper prices (hence the term deal)...

I don't think promotional freebies that are and always will be free can be classified as a "deal"... It's like me posting "Free air outside"...

Why should somebody be banned because you don't like what they are posting? I can understand not wanting 50 free stuffs posts, but what your asking for is a bit over the line, IMHO. You may not want that free stuff, but obviously some people do.

i know it sounds extreme but the ban on the stuff is to reduce the clutter and the ban on the individuals is just because no one here follows rules unless they are strictly enforced (see all the "In Before the L" posts)

Of course we wouldn't be having this dialogue at all if certain members didn't decide to flood the Hot Deals forum with stuff that makes real deals hard to get to... If you are a regular Hot Deals forum-goer then you know what I mean...

There are good examples of freebies out there... Shot glasses from Jack Daniels, 250 free business cards, $10 off $10 coupons, and even the free t-shirts... But you have to draw the line somewhere... There are obviously more freebies around the internet than deals that actually save you money...

Just being aware of something that's already free isn't saving you anything because it costs nothing and you can always get it for nothing...

How would you like it if people decided to post every single freebie they got at a Career Expo and where to get it? The info's out there, whoever wants it knows where to find it, let's be more sensitive to people looking for deals...

Actually, one of my friends was banned from this board for the I*TL infraction. So your still depending on the will of the Mod on duty, some ban over it, some don't. I just don't see any sense in banning people who just want to help somebody else find a freebie or two. And I really doubt that would ever be a possiblity, I think you might be grasping at straws with that one. Some people say already this board is too moderated, and then there are other times like this were more moderation is asked for unnecessarily. Makes me glad I am not a Mod, I know that much. 😉

i know what u mean... last month i made my first I*TL just for the hell of it, didn't know it was an offense cuz i saw it all the time, and i was given a timeout...

I'm sorry I didn't mean a permanent ban, the timeouts just block you for a while...

I honestly think most of those freebie postings are just scams to get people's info... You can verify that by asking people who do that stuff what % they actually get...

Well, I will give you that point, on the scam thing. I have sent for so many free t-shirts I should be able to dress a small country, and I think I actually received three? But oh well, you know yourself once you do this for a while you learn what the good deals are, and whats not worth your time. But I do think a Freebie thread would be a good idea, then you could pretty much make everyone happy. 😉

exactly.... i'm not out to eliminate freebies, i just know a lot of ppl spend a lot of time looking for deals to save money....

but we sometimes forget that time is money and if you have to spend twice the time to get to a deal you need then I think you've lost some of the value...

i think everyone's time is worth more than free gum, free soap, etc. so I believe a compromise is in order...

It was okay when there were a few freebies floating around (some pretty good ones, too)...then hell broke loose. So something needs to be done.

The "hell" that broke loose was someone trying to prove a point of freebies clogging up the "hot deal" forum by bumping multiple threads posted by Wolfalos (point being Wolfalos did not post them all today or tonight, but for the past several weeks).

Well, it doesn't feel nicer to me knowing someone was deleted off the board because someone made it their personal holy mission to bump their threads. More like makes me not want to start a new thread on HD at all for fear it could happen to me if someone went ballistic.

It was out of hand though, even before the super bumps. The only way to get the mod's attention was this extreme act. My tactic of posting some freebies with a link to this tread didn't help as much as what slacker did.

I do not believe the end justifies the means, so I cannot agree with your method, nor Slackers. Do enjoy your HD forum with an extra helping of moderation and rules though.

I agree that something needs to be done.

A separate thread would work. It would be specified that it would be for POSTING freebies only. No discussion, follow up, etc. One post per freebie, in the thread, great. It would work, all would be well.

Or a different forum... which no one would read. I honestly kinda like the freebies, so I am leaning toward the single-thread idea over the separate-forum idea.

Cheers,
-Dave

I think the seperate thread's a good idea. It's not that I hate the freebies or freebie posters, but some of this stuff costs less than $1 to buy. The t-shirts are nice though.
