Poll: To step back and get perspective. has ATI caught up with NVidia?

I think ATI has passed NVidia (when it comes to graphics cards, though high end professional cards, i'm not sure).
But I would not say by miles. Though I think when ATI came out with the ATI 9700 Pro card they really
caught NVidia with its pants down.

NVIDIA Corporation continued to loose the ground in the total standalone graphics processors market ? includes desktop and mobile GPUs and VPUs ? in the third quarter of the year by declining 1% to 53% sequentially. Markham, Ontario-based ATI Technologies, on the other hand, gained solid 3% and reached 40% milestone. Shares of companies like SiS and Matrox Graphics were 3% per each with SiS leading in terms of unit sales.

NVIDIA also tripled its sales of Performance Direct X 9.0 GPUs and grabbed 32% of the market. ATI was flat in terms of units, as a consequence, its share felt to 68%. In overall, it means that ATI Technologies still sells loads more high-performance DirectX 9.0 parts than the rival.

My geforce 3 is still a great card, but I've been waiting over a year for nVidia to come out with a worthy successor to the gf4 series and I'm still waiting. And the cheating, lies, and lawyering by nV have really lowered my opinion of the company.

If I get my P4 or A64 upgrade any time soon it will have my first ATI card in it, probably a 9800 Pro since the XT is a bit overpriced (though a much better value than the fx5950).

ATi 12mo. $1.39 billion, $35.2 mil income.
NV 12mo $1.76bn, $46.2mil income.

Neither company is doing too badly really.

well, this has been a nice thread. no real flaming. ATOT being mature. 🙂

but seriously, isn't it kind of cool to look back. it hasn't been that long and already it is ingrained in so many ATers that ATI is a competitive graphics company. even 1 year ago i'll bet it would have been hard to find even 30 percent of ATers that felt that ATI was competitive with NVidia.

you have to love progress.

Nvidia came from an unsucessful line of cards to beat out the Voodoo cards. ATI came from an unsuccessful line of cards to beat out the Geforces. What'll come to beat the ATI's? Matrox?

I'll agree with this assessment.. My GF3 is still chugging along just fine for the things that I do and the games that I play. In a year or two I'll upgrade everything, and it will be good to have choices.. 🙂

hmm. ATI was around for a long time before the NVidia/3dfx thing happened. they were very successful. i had an old ATI 2d card with like 8 mb of ram and that was a pretty good card. ATI was a name brand back then.

so, it's not like they came out of nowhere.

J jumped on the ATI band wagon too early......... My 8500 experience was one of frustration waiting for updated solid drivers became too much.... The 8500 had problems galore at launch and many many games did not work with it... the driver updates were laboriously few and far between.... As far as the graphic were concerned they were awsome until the card bombed out froze up ect..... RMA the card twice and both replacemetns had the same issue... even tried the 8500 in other peoples machines........ For me the 8500 epitomized too much technological promise and way too little support from ATI........
I dumped that card and vowed never to go back to ATI.... I do still remember the great 2d graphics on photos ect... 3d was another story all together......

I run a ti4100 and am very happy right now.... I am considering a AIW card............. Probably not though... I remember the 300.00 bath ATI threw me the first go around and man was I pissed cause I did'nt want to sell it to anyone else on the off chance it was the card.........

From what I see it looks like when the 9500 came out, Nvidia was falling behind. Now with the 5900 series they are only slightly behind. As long as Nvidia continues to fight most likely they will do the one upmanship.

to interpret the results so far. 5 out of 104 people feel that Nvidia is ahead. 54 of 104 feel that the two are competitive. 45 of 104 feel that ATI has long passed NVidia.


all in all, according to ATOTers, ATI is doing VERY VERY well.

Actually, I think we do agree. Ultimately, the reputation of ATI and NVidia is defined by their products. Not by a single product, but by a range of products over time. There definitely is lag time. The 8500 was a great card and really put ATI on equal footing with NVidia. But the reputation didn't catch up until they followed up the 8500 success with the sheer dominance of the 9700 launch. So it is not just a matter of their current products, but also their past products. That is why NVidia still has a high performance reputation. Their past success is still respected and most people expect them to have future success. But if they continue to trail ATI in performance over the next year or two, their reputation will suffer.

I just wish 3Dfx was still around. I freaking loved my Voodoo3. It's still running in my old PC.

The 9700pro changed everything. There was nothing out on the market to convince me to upgrade from my ti4200 until the 9700 cores came along.

say what you will about the past, the fact is that ATI's current top-end cards are better than Nvidia's top-end cards in just about every category possible - if John Carmack says it, its good enough for me.

I read last week somewhere that the coders that used to work for Nvidia writing their drivers have all migrated (been pirated by) to ATI. So, if you can't beat the competition, hire their best workers!

My first ATI product is a NP 9500. I'm just not impressed. I may have a cooling issue but I keep the driver current and experience artifacts on almost every app.

I'm eagerly awaiting for Nvidia to come out with something mroe representative of their past work.

did you buy it new or used? was it a refurb? sounds like someone tried to soft mod it and it failed.

as far as video cards, ATI cards are far better currently. The 9700 and 9800 lines of cards are great, while the Nvidia FX is hardly an improvement over the GF4. Though Nvidia makes some sweet mobo chipsets.
