Who is the greatest film-maker? It doesn't matter what your criteria is, whether it be for single greatest film, talent, consistency etc.

I love David Lynch! I also really like the Coen Brothers. Miller's Crossing and The Big lebowski were their best!

You are out of your mind !!!

Greatest of All-Time:

#1 - David Lean

#2 - Billy Wilder

My Favorites:

#1 - David Lean

#2 - Ridley Scott

Did you like Blue Velvet? I thought it was a little freakish but I loved Twin Peaks-talk about a nightmare made real :Q

orson welles, vitttorio de sica, akira kurosawa, ingmar bergman, jean renoir, roman
polanski, sydney pollack, fellini, shohei imamura, kar-wai wong, billy wilder, stanley
kubrick, preston sturgess, john ford, victor fleming, pier paolo pasolini, etc.

I absolutely loved Blue Velvet! 😀 The openning scene has the old guy watering his yard which is in a beautiful "only in the movies" neighborhood. He suddenly has a heart attack and drops to the ground. The camera then moves to a crack under his house where you see a swarm of insects eating away at the house. That scene kind of set the tone for the rest of the film. It's set in a pretty lttle Home Town, USA setting but jumps into the weird and obscure underbelly of that town's criminal element. It reminds you of all the weird things that are happening right under your nose no matter where you live. I love it! 😛

added Ridley Scott, Akira and Kubrick-obviously some of the earlier directors I have missed out as I'm more into contemporary filmmakers - but the poll list is getting long!! No-one mentioning Truffaut?

also, elia kazan, coppola, mike nichols, john huston, woody allen, otto preminger,
terrence malick, d.w. griffith, howard hawks, george cukor, charles chaplin,
frank capra, bernardo bertolucci, william wyler, milos forman, and john sayles.

Who voted for spielburg? yuck....

Put Darren Aranovksy on that list if you want me to take it seriously 😉
From the list I choose burton, kubrick, coens.

Noriaki - I considered John Woo, I really loved his earlier work in HK with Chow Yun Fat, unfortunately he moved to Hollywood and the rest is history 🙁

George Lucas should NOT be on that list. He's very innovative and he made good stories with the whole Star Wars thing, but he is NOT a good filmmaker.
