Not the best movie .. that's been done a hundred times, and #3 doesn't even really compete

The characters.

Hee hee - even though I named myself (and my cat!) after Vito, I had to vote for Michael, who is just a better fleshed-out character than the Godfather himself. That said, I think you should have included an option for Vito as a child, who we see singing when he is stuck in TB quarantine.

You have GOT to be kidding. Godfather I and II are on the top tens of everyone I have ever met who saw them (come to think of it, I think less than 25% of the men I know do NOT say The Godfather is their favorite film). I hope you are joking, but if you aren't, what is your favorite movie?

I've sat through one of them, I don't remember which one, but it was sooooo slow and boring. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Currently, #1 on my list is the LOTR trilogy. Before that it was Hudson Hawk.

The only list of mine the Godfathers are on is the "Films I don't like" list.

To each his own I guess - I thought LOTR was a two-star movie with no real emotional interest (something which was teeming through both of the first two Godfather films), and you are definitely taking a leap of faith by including the entire trilogy in your top films when only one has been released. I actually liked Hudson Hawk, but until today I thought I was the only one in America who did. Anyway, I doubt we will be getting together for movie night anytime soon!

LOTR is just a fluffy hollywood adaptation. The actors were novices, the plot was good, but not nearly as good as God Father. Don't get me wrong, LOTR was a great no brainer film, something i would watch with a 5 year old. But, to put it against the God Father is akin to us fighting Iraq.

exactly. better acting in the godfather for sure, because the movie had no special effects to rely on, as lotr does.

I guess we didn't see the same film, because I don't know what you are talking about.

Godfather Trilogy is up there with my favorite films of all time.

I like the young Vito the best, followed by the old Vito, then Michael. The young Vito was just all bad @ss yet very respectable.

i too thought that LOTR was too long. I know its a trilogy and all, but doesn't mean they HAVE to make it three parts. Yes they both are trilogy's but again are we REALLY even comparing LOTR to the Godfather? Gimme a break.

I thought LOTR was technically proficient and true to the source material (both of which are GOOD things!). I just find the story and characters rather dull as an adult, due to the total lack of emotional pull. I LOVED the books when I was ten or so, and read them again and again. As an adult, though, I found the film lifeless and rather dull since we were given essentially zero reason to care about the characters, who behaved robotically and without any real personality. To me, the lack of emotion, combined with a rather simplistic plot, does not make for a satisfying experience as a viewer.

Obviously everyone is different, and I say each of us should enjoy whatever we like - I would not say that the Godfather films are "better" than LOTR just because I like them much more. To the extent anyone cares, the first two Godfather films are among the most critically acclaimed movies of all time, and have certainly proven they have legs and a continuing audience over several decades. The LOTR films will always have a loyal fan base, but I'm not sure that, outside their core audience, they will be remembered as classics.

I voted for Brando because he's the original...

If we're talking about acting, Pacino in Part II is good.

That's probably why I like it. I have no empathy for real people, let alone fictional characters.
