Poll: Tesla vs Edison

I believe that if Edison was not in Tesla's way, we would be much more advanced than we are now.

Tesla believed he could develop unlimited electrical power for the entire world that is transported through air... the thing is.. he probby could have.

Tesla can duplicate people.

++1 🙂 Just what I was thinking!

Great movie!

I actually just finished watching that movie. Christopher Nolan is one freaking amazing director - I've watched all his movies (except the Following) and they all kick ass.

No, what Tesla wanted to do is transmit power through the ground not through the air. And no, just because Tesla was a genius does not mean he can someone miracle electricity out of thin air. As for power running though the ground that works just fine they use it in DC power lines and tons of other places.

EDIT: One might also want to point out that while AC pwned DC the reverse is true for the companies they were associated with as General Electric pwned Westinghouse (except in nuclear reactors where Westinghouse wins although "Westinghouse" doesn't actually exist anymore it was bought by some Japanese firm).

Tesla was more focused, Edison on the other hand had inventions in all these different places- like the record player and light bulb.

Tesla. I recall reading that he disliked Edison's seemingly haphazard methods, and that if he'd done more math work, he'd have saved himself a lot of work.

And Tesla had the idea of using AC to transmit power, without which, those light bulbs probably wouldn't have been of much use. Sending lots of DC power over long distances....well, the entire world's production of aluminum and copper would probably be devoted to making electrical conductors, which would be several feet in diameter.😉

The funny thing is that if this was anywhere but a computer nerd forum half the people wouldn't even know who Tesla was. That being said I bet 95% of the people here still don't know what a "Tesla" is actually the measure of. I',m a freaking electrical engineer I sure as hell can't remember without looking it up what all those damn electromagnetism units are.

EDIT: interestingly enough with the development of solid state devices it is now actually possible to efficiently use DC for electrical power. In fact it is considerably MORE efficient for long run electric lines that AC is.

Especially when you consider the number of motors that are running on variable speed drives and such alot of the power is being rectified to DC one way or another.

Tesla was a better mad scientist while Edison was a better bidnessman. Edison exploited Tesla. Tesla deserves more credit.

Tesla. Do a bit of reading and you'll realize that he was crazy smart. Not crazy or smart but both at the same time. His successes were momentous and his failures equally so. I still wonder if that ray gun he envisioned would really work...

Tesla was a brilliant and very interesting person imo. He invented some nice things (AC motor) and had lots of crazy but inspirational ideas. Edison was really a businessman.

It's a shame that most people think of "Red Alert" when the name Tesla comes up. But at least his got his own physical unit 🙂

Heh, yeah, can't say that there was an "Edison Cannon" or anything like that. In your FACE, Edison! 😛

I recall seeing a picture of Samuel Clemens fiddling around with stuff in Tesla's lab.🙂
