is it on by default? i never turned it /onoff specifically, so it is whatever the default is

why doesn't the poll have "default" as an option?

its on by default, it takes up performance a tiny bit to take snap shots of the system and uses up lots of hard drive space

I think it's on by default in XP. That being said, it has NEVER worked on any of my computers. I try to restore and it goes through its steps, restarts and tells me that its not possible and to try another date.

No Restore = Clean Install

home desktop is now a linux machine :)

i dont think i adjusted it before? but i also installed this XP on this comp about 2 years ago. or so. I just checked it says "system restore turned off on all drives"

edit: I should probably back up my 2 drives (one 80giger and one 65giger) both have 2 gigs free...and I havent backed up anything on them.

i've 'restored' my system with XP's restore once and have done it with relative's PC's. worked great.

fvck, thanks for reminding me. My wife (IT Admin for her company) wisely said "just use system restore" when I got hit with mad spyware this weekend. How stupid did I look when I turned to her and said I turned it off... :eek:

I use it. There's been times when I installed something and the easiest way to fix the system was with a restore. The last time was somehow upgrading my sound drivers FUBARed XP, so I used system restore and chose not to upgrade my sound drivers. Beats reinstalling XP and all the rest of my software.

Everyone should have it on. It's just useful and really doesn't affect the system performance or use at all.

I have it on but only for my C drive, which contains only my system files. It has proven itself useful several times. I also have it set to only make an automatic system checkpoint once a week instead of the default once a day. There's a reg hack for that.

About as stupid as you look for getting all of the spyware in the first place. People in corporate IT have to use Restore because they also have to use IE. Use FireFox and you get no spyware, then you don't need restore either.

As to the original question, hell no I don't use it. Most people who know what they're doing don't. And yes it does eat quite a bit of resources, try removing it and all the other useless MS crap under services.msc - like Indexing, Auto Update, etc. - and you will notice a difference. Start up time is faster, overall the OS feels lighter and quicker.

I just leave it on, HD space usually isn't an issue for any of my PC's and it has saved me some time in the past, though it doesn't always work very well
