Hi,
I have a home built system that I put together a year ago:
Recently the system has been very unstable in both Win98SE and Linux (kernel 2.2.14).
In Win 98 I'll get popups which say that an application has caused a page fault accessing a memory location it shouldn't be touching. Once that happens with one app, it starts to happen with all the apps such that nothing works anymore until I reboot the system.
In Linux recently, utilities like bunzip2 and rpm --checksig started giving me incorrect results. They started telling me that some archives were corrupted when on other days they said they were fine. It's almost like on some days my computer was calculating the crc or md5 signature incorrectly. In addition, running Java on my machine no longer worked as I'd start to get different error messages from the JVM with each invocation.
The Abit mobo has 2 temperature sensors. After a couple hours of Quake III/Win98, the Hardware Doctor utility says both temps are at 37C -- with an ambient around 25C. From reading the other boards this doesn't seem high for the cpu, but is this high for the mobo?
A weird thing has recently been happening with my keyboard. After I power down the system, sometimes my keyboard will still have the NumLock light on -- for like 12+ hours! Would this be a short in the power supply or would it point to a problem with the motherboard?
Anyway, I'm not really sure how to procede. Right now I suspect the following things:
Before I start throwing down bucks replacing everything in my machine I was wondering if someone saw a pattern in all of this. Several times, I thought the problems went away. But because they were intermittent, they would resurface again and dash my hopes once again. I don't even know how to tell if the problem has been resolved.
I've been dealing with this for a couple of months now and am very frustrated. Any ideas would really be appreciated!
Thanks,

I have a home built system that I put together a year ago:
- Abit BX6R2 mobo - recently upgraded to QR patch
- Celeron 533 - not overclocked
- 256MB Ram pc100 generic - recently added 128MB module
- Diamond Viper TNT2 Ultra
- Netgear FA310TX NIC

Anyway, I'm not really sure how to procede. Right now I suspect the following things:
- My power supply is bad even though it's only 1 year old
- My mobo is bad -- doesn't seem likely
- My mobo is having heat problems -- I've already added 2 additional fans and cut holes in my case.
- The new memory module is just a bad egg and doesn't play well with others in the sandbox.
- Pilot error -- my neighbor's dog had me do something bad to my computer again.
