Poll: Sports. What's the big deal?

I have never cared for team (professional) sports and am actually appauled that some criminal can be called an "athletic hero" while making millions.
To me, there is nothing "heroic" about what these often abusive, criminally inclined, spoiled brats do.

To me, a true athlete is someone like a marathon runner, strong-man, downhill skier, etc. You know--individual achievers.

What to you people think? Flame on...

Your poll is needs more options. I don't think they deserve legal immunity but I have no problem with their salaries or publicity.

There isn't a single sport that I enjoy. Its all boring. I guess this will make some woman happy one day because I won't spend saturday and sundays watching sports.

You may be doing a little stereotyping. I don't think all athletes are abusive, criminally inclined, or spoiled brats...

like, Mike Tyson ?
There are bad eggs in every field. Why are you specifically against team sports?

gittyup,

You're right. Only a small fraction of them actually fit this profile.

zzz,

Not against them. Just don't care to endorse them. Perhaps I should have said "professional" sports in an attempt to include boxing. Good point.

<< Sports. What's the big deal? >>

Well, if you put it like that, what's the big deal about anything?

A lot of people find team sports fun to play and entertaining to watch. I guess that's the big deal.

He probably got bumped off his high school/college team or something.

People are willing to pay to watch sports so the players should get the money. Therefore, I don't think they are overpaid at all.

I just never got off on yelling at the top of my lungs at a TV set when "the big game" was on. I was only asking to find out what the big deal is because I fail to completely understand the logic of cheering for people who make a lot more money in one week than the typical American does in a year.

And no, I was never booted from school sports.

They aren't overpaid the same way actors aren't overpaid. They generate the money, so they should get their cut. Who else should get it? The owner of the team?

So you don't like it out of jealousy?

It doesn't matter that they make more than me in one game than I do in 1 year. It's a source of entertainment for many people. I bet you many would say, "Why do you post in these forums where most of these people you've never seen in your life?" It's all people's personal preferences and what they do for fun.

Because people aren't overwhlemed with jealousy when watching them.

I don't yell at TV either. The most you'd ever get from me is quiet clapping and a "Good job". People who yell (or communicate in any other manner) at their TVs need to seek help.

Personally, when I go to a sporting event, screw the game, I'm there for the atmosphere and the experience. Plus, the beer and the women that are usually there are good too.

Yeah, like the first has nothing to do with the second 😉
