Poll: Spincast or baitcast?

Baitcast. I have a hard time throwing a spincast because I grew up on baitcasters. Plus LOTS more control with one. I've got a nice Abu Garcia for big fish (hold like 300 yards of 15 pound test) and some smaller low profiles from Shimano for bass/smaller fish.

Although I still get "professional overrun" from time to time. 😉

Depends on the application. I fish saltwater so I use baitcast setups a lot.

I've never used a spincast before, but my cousin uses them for saltwater.

I just don't see the appeal.

Picked this one up this year. Very happy with it so far. Adjustable centrifugal brakes.

Shimano Curado

Yeah, I had to really hold myself back yesterday. I was looking at a higher-end reel, but I've got to make sure my latest fishing kick lasts before I spend more money. I almost bought a Shimano Castiac.

On a separate note, I'm highly disappointed in the number of rods that don't break down. I wanted a 7' rod, but none of them at the store (and it's a huge store) came apart. I ended up with a 6'6" Shimano.

I'm used to trolling small farm ponds and stripmine lakes in search of fiesty little panfish (crappie, bluegill, small mouth bass, ect) and dodging lots of logs, weeds, ect. All I've ever used are spincast setups.

A small underhand flip and you drop your lure right in where you want it. You give up casting distance for short range accuracy.

😕
It doesn't get any more accurate than pitching/flipping with a baitcaster. You can put it in a bucket from 5-30 feet. I frequently pitch into hollow stumps and no way could you get that accurate with a spincaster.

I'm putting the rod/reel together and putting line on it now (which is what made me start the thread), and I have to say that I'm a fan of the reel. The difference in this $70 reel and the $8 reels I've always used is huge.

It's like buttah!

Make sure you put the line on right and with the proper tension. Do don't want a whole, some though, lot of tension on the line when you spool it on.

if you can't get that accurate with a spincaster you're doing something wrong

I can nail the exact same spot time and again with my casts

What's on the other end makes a big difference too. Most of my fishing is done with an ultralight setup - 4lb - 6lb test with very light lures. That's sort of the bread and butter of spincast.

if i had to have only one it would without a doubt be spinning.
of course..any choice depends on what you are fishing for and what you are throwing
hardlures/swimbaits etc. ill take out my baitcaster for
soft plastics i like on a m ml rod with a spinning reel.
75% of the time the baitcaster stays in the closet

spincast, i dont have any use for.

I guess I fail at my terms. I interchanged spincast w/ spinning. They are related but different. Spincast is a closed face "spinning" with a thumb based bail.

I use a "spinning" reel most of the time.

Don't feel bad. I made the damned poll and I had them screwed up.

3/4ths of my fishing is for trout and anything besides a spinning reel will get you hung up on trees hanging over or the shoreline real fast. For the other times when I hit the river for cat or walleye I have a medium spinner and a baitcaster.

lol

I've always used baitcast. I don't really know why, it's just what I grew up using.

I use them all! If I'm fishing the surf with plugs or lures, I'm usually carrying around my spinning outfit. If I'm going to be chucking bait, then I'll carry my conventional setup, unless it's really windy and snotty outside. If the wind is howling I'll go out with the spinner. Now if I'm going fly fishing then it usually depends on the species I'm targeting, for Rainbows and Browns I just take my 5wt, for Stripers and larger saltwater species I'll take the 9wt.
