Assuming of course it's a legit WinXP installation. I usually wait a while before downloading any Microsoft updates to see if they screw with other people's computers. How big of a deal is SP2 in terms of security fixes?

Becarefull, there was a early version of the final SP2 floating around that was only for the German version of XP.

Someone on Neowin posted a md5 sum for the official download from the windows beta site. The one presently on the ms-beta newsgroup matched that md5 sum.

This isn't meant for public release yet, I'm surprised a site like Anandtech is allowing links to it!!!

Like Bill said , what's the rush, wait till its available publically from a legit site like Microsoft.

Virus writers etc. like to wait for MS to release fixes for security holes, then they write to take advantage of those holes on PC's that haven't been patched yet.

I'm going to wait a while.

Of course, that's what I said about Doom3, and guess what's on my desk...

I've already got it installed on my desktop and you guys arent missing much.

Aside from the differant build number I havent seen it look or act any differantly than RC2.

As far as pushing it out to my end users I plan on waiting at least a month so as to give it some shake-down time and to let my department get used to running it.

You mean like how they've had the RCs out for months now and had them downloaded by hundreds of thousands of people?

Yes this SP is a big deal, but this is why they've been so slow about releasing it in the first place. This is also why they've had the RCs available to the public all along.

Sure, I'll be a guinea pig.
why? Because you should have a partion setup for the OS. IF something gets fvkced ur easily saved by just formatting.
I always format and i had the sp2 on here acouple formats before. Had no problems with the RC's and the new control panel thing is annoyin tell about av and firewall on.. i just disabled it.

One GUI change that you may have missed is with the properties of network connections. Right click on local area connect and go to status. The GUI is slightly different (especially if you have a wireless connection). If you click properties, there is a new check box that says notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity.

If your card is unable to find a DHCP server, you will see what this checkbox does.

I've been using one of the release candidates on a box for months. I'll give it a try on the laptop with a solid SP1 backup image.
