That's exactly what I do. You can install a program to run on any partition. Where the files are is usually set in the program, not Windoze.

i try to keep mine some what organized, after a fresh install of windows 2k i have a partition for programs as well named D:\ (to lazy to find a more symbolic drive letter), then just make sure software is pointed to that drive during installation.. i dont know of any programs that will change the default location of programs to install to d:\Program files but i wish that i did. not sure if it is possible to easily change program location after installation since some programs use INIs, others are registery based and you may not be able to find and locate where it points to the app path. so having it point to D:\ on first installation is likely your best bet

yeah, seperate data from OS, but the programs have to be reinstalled anyway, so what would be the point?

Yeah. At least, for my last install (3+ years old) I did.

45gb total,

~1.5gb FAT32 for Win9x
~2.0gb NTFS for Win2k
~41gb FAT32 for programs

No, my 60gb HD is divided into half: one half being the OS and all of my programs, then the other being my MP3 collection. I have a second 40gb HD, but I only use that for recording video and time-shifting on my ATI AIW Radeon 8500 DV

Yep. OS on one partition, programs on another partition, working files on a third. I like it this way because I can ghost the OS partition, and backup my working files.

Well, I have four hard drives in my system so I can reformat and reinstall my OS without losing everything else.

I have Windows XP on a 5GB NTFS partition along with small utilities such as Winamp and Trillian.
I have Windows Programs and various non-MP3 files on a 25GB FAT32 partition.
I have Debian on a 2GB Ext2 partition.
I have my Debian /home on a 3GB Ext2 partition.
I have my MP3s on an 11GB FAT32 partition.

No. I have one partition for the OS and programs, another for storage (pictures, music, downloads, etc). That way I can format the OS/programs partition and still have my stuff.

appz and os on one partition. ~5gb should be sufficient. never install games on this partition.then ghost the partition after a clean install of windows with all sp1 updates etc and basic appz installed. whenever you hose your system you can easily restore your os partition to untouched perfection in a few minutes

nope - why bother it really doesnt make a difference.
There is no real gain from it nowadays.

I use my second drive for storage, backups, etc.
