19 oh yeah!

but thats only cigars and its like 1 every 6 months or so... no one considers me a smoker. i guess i'm not really. its almost like chicken wings to me... something to do once every 6 months at most.

I started smoking after 21. It's not an addiction for me, I only smoke when I am at clubs or bars where I would bump some off someone in the cool off area. It's a great conversation starter. But I never ever smoke in my house or anywhere else.

I was around 5 when I first started, a few here and there with my brother and sister. then when I was 8 I was smoking pretty regular. by the time I was 11, I was smoking at home, pack a day. quit for a year when I was 13 and started back and have not been able to quit completely since. Worst substance that exists. Have tried patches, pills, cold turkey nothing so worked. If you don't smoke dont ever start.
My younger brother was in his early 20's when he started.

My uncle who I respect quite a bit smoked for 40 years and JUST quit. Cold turkey. When talking to him about it, he said one of the most attractive things about it.... It's a social activity and can put both parties at comfort. He said that aspect helped him and his wife often.

I don't smoke.. but nobody can deny the power of addiction.

I never really "started".

In HS I tried it about 3X hated it, again in college about 3x it sucked again.

Now shrooms is a different story. I did them and LSD about 20x.

I don't smoke, but my 21-year old cousin just started smoking. I couldn't believe it, he was always the one who made a huge deal about not smoking.

The same goes for drinking alcohol. They are social activities. I do both only when I am socializing.

Damn guys, what made you guys start?

Peer pressure? Look cool? Didn't know the affects of it?

I don't know how it was back then when it was first introduced, but now I see it and I'm almost freaked out by it. I'm curious as to what it is like but I would never try it out since I'm scared of becoming addicted and I really hate the smell of it.

I must have been about 7 when i tried smoking. I smoked a couple of packs and that was it - when the novelty wore off, i got bored with it. Then i started for real when i went to high school and finally quit for good last year - and have been smoke-free since, for 15 months. Smoking is stupid. If you don't smoke, don't start.

I was 11 when I first started smoking. It was off and on smoking. I'd go a few months before I'd smoke again. I really started around 16. I smoked about a pack a day until I was almost 19. I probably wouldn't have smoked as much if smoking hadn't been so easy. My mom would buy me the cigarettes. She bought me a cigarette case and my own lighter for Christmas one year.

I am so glad that I quit. I wish I had never started. Very nasty habit.

oh my :Q
i would be mad at my mother for that!!

When I look back I am! Her excuse is always, "I smoke so I couldn't tell you not to." That's also her pitifull excuse for why she allowed me to quit school. "I quit school so I couldn't stop you from doing it."

Sorry but at some point you have to take control of your own life and stop blaming other people for your poor decisions.
I'm not blaming my mother. If you had read my initial post you would know that. She just made making the stupid decisions a lot easier. That's all I said. She could have tried to stop me but she chose not to. I don't blame her for my smoking. That was my decision. Read next time before you post.

BTW: I quit school because I was having problems and my mother said that she would home school me. So she withdrew me. She kept putting it off. Months passed and then she told me that she couldn't do it. She said that she didn't have the patience to teach me at home. By that point it was too late for me to go back. I'd say that she played a major role in that bad decision.

Re: this poll.
Wouldn't stopping underage smoking, even completely just adjust your numbers so that the only responses would be either non-smoker or started over 18? It wouldn't really prove that not starting early means that you won't start at all.

I started at exctly 18, on my birthday in fact so where does that put me in the poll? I used to smoke only when i drank beer as they go so well together, but now I drink all the time so i guess i can be considered a smoker by default. Damn thee vile temptress.
