Poll shows troops in support of war
By Robert Hodierne Army Times

Despite a year of ferocious combat, mounting casualties and frequent deployments, support for the war in Iraq remains very high among the active-duty military, according to a Military Times Poll.

Sixty-three percent of respondents approve of the way President Bush is handling the war, and 60% remain convinced it is a war worth fighting. Support for the war is even greater among those who have served longest in the combat zone: Two-thirds of combat vets say the war is worth fighting.

But the men and women in uniform are under no illusions about how long they will be fighting in Iraq; nearly half say they expect to be there more than five years.

In addition, 87%% say they're satisfied with their jobs and, if given the choice today, only 25% say they'd leave the service.

Compared with last year, the percentages for support for the war and job satisfaction remain essentially unchanged.

A year ago, 77% said they thought the military was stretched too thin to be effective. This year, that number shrank to 66%.

The findings are part of the annual Military Times Poll, which this year included 1,423 active-duty subscribers to Air Force Times, Army Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times.

The subscribers were randomly surveyed by mail in late November and early December. The poll has a margin of error of +/?2.6%.

Among the poll's other findings:

? 75% oppose a military draft.

? 60% blame Congress for the shortage of body armor in the combat zone.

? 12% say civilian Pentagon policymakers should be held accountable for abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

My only concern is the politics that are being played in Washington for P.R. purposes is, literally, killing our troops. Remember Somalia? The US General wanted to go in with full armor and air support but the big-wigs in Washington were worried about a P.R. nightmare and only allowed Humvees and little helicopters to be flown in.

Let the Generals on the ground in Iraq decide how much force is necessary w/o having their hands tied due to some bureaucrat(s) worried about offending some people with our superiour firepower.

speaking of supporting the troops, put those support the troop stickers by the gas tanks where they belong.

51% of the US citizens now think that the war in Iraq WASN'T worth fighting.

That's a clear mandate, isn't it?

Geez, let's see.

Troops who are fighting and on the front lines in Iraq approve of the war.

Liberal treemongers brainwashed from Michael Moore and watch the liberal-biased news oppose the war.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.....Geez, I wonder, McFly!!!

PS

Gannett owns USA Today (OP link) as well as Air Force Times, Army Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times.

It is almost impossible kill or be killed if you do not support the mission. Even if you disagree, you keep your mouth shut and do it anyway. While you are there HELL YEAH! DO IT! Same in VN, and a lot (whole lot) of soldiers who enlisted realize now they fought and died for something not needed.

Of course they support it, just like soldiers support their wars down through the ages. The Confederate and Union soldiers supported their particular side, they were Americans, and yet they killed each other.

The poll reflects that water is wet.

Haven't you been paying attention? Anyone that disagrees with the Royal Monarchy is an anti-American commie liberal.

(guess you righties are going to have to get to work on that Abu Gharib expansion--another 55 million is going to take up some serious space)

I noticed that the Pentagon hasn't released who the troops voted for in the 2004 election. If they did, I must've missed it.

Stay the course, George. Stay the course.

I thought that was low too. Two out of five troops were brave enough to show they do not think the war is worth fighting. Half expect to still be in Iraq in five years. That does not sound like good news to me.

Why would the pentagon have ballots? They are sent to the county in which each troop is registered. Its probably impossible to count the military vote, as they are usually look just like regular absentee ballots, so theres really no way to tell.

If I had been riskin my life for a year and been doing lots of hard work, I wouldn't like to think it all had been in vain. And also I'm pretty sure that the military know they have to keep the morale high to get a functioning army. I believe that the soldiers are doing a good job, but I think that the leaders haven't given them the right job and the right education/equipment for the job.

It was my understanding that military ballots flowed through the Pentagon before being distributed to the appropriate counties...

They flow through the military mail service, which just dumps them right into the US postal service. No one really has a clue what the military vote was (nothing wrong with a secret ballot, IMO) and like I said, its probably impossible to count, considering a good amount of the military is still on the mainland, some voted near base if they have residencey there, some just put thiers in the mail, so even if the pentagon tried to re-route the ballots, they would be missing the majority of them.

A few independent polls this year pegged it at 70-75% for Bush

Actually I think that number is probably closer to reality than you think. The conservatives have done a great job of putting the word "liberal" in the same context as "pedaphile", so a lot of people claim "I ain't no liberal", but most of them follow a "liberal" doctrine down the line.
