I say that the general public need not see any more of these pictures...

NO!

Why take any chance with our soldier's lives? Let them assume all they want, but don't give them actual pictures. I actually agree with the Republicans about this. So shoot me. :) (Oops, don't tell Galt I said that. He's such a literalist....)

Our nation was founded on a set of principles that emphasize the importance of a free flow of information. Other things being equal, I think we always need to err in favor of more information, rather than less. Absent some particularized need to withhold some images (either because of a pending court-martial, for genuine national security reasons, etc), I think they should all be released.

The thing is, information is like water in today's culture, and it will find a way to flow, even if it's through a tiny hole. Somebody outside DoD will, through some channels, lay their hands on these, and when they do, they will be on the Internet within a day, and available to the world. In turn, they will materialize in newspapers in NY, Cairo, Jerusalem, Sao Paolo, Moscow, etc. At least if the US government releases them, it can do so on its own terms, and in doing so, send the message that it is not a shadow government with something to hide.

The only way to prevent the prisoner-abuse scandal from getting even worse is by taking the bull by the horns and confronting these issues head-on IMO.

Let the people and NOT THE MEDIA decide what is "viewable" and what isn't. I am tired of biased censorship by the media. Fo course, they are free to sell their take on the situation. Let the people decide whether to buy them or not.

As Sen. McCain has said (paraphrasing):

There's never been a scandal that hasn't eventually leaked to the public. Go ahead and release all of the images/video at once to get it out there instead of waiting to have them trickle out for weeks.

It isn't necessary that everyone should be coerced into seeing them, or that they be used as a manipulator. It IS important that people have a RIGHT to see them if they so desire, and that their existance is known to all.

Exactly, any news source will kill to have those images first, so someone will eventually leak them.

After the crap we saw yesterday, by all means. I want all of Arabia to take a good, long look. These are criminals and this is what happens to them. Its far short of chopping of someones head while praising Allah, but so be it. Humilliation is a far cry from a painful and despicable death that those Muslum terrorists behind towels on there face did to a tied up US citizen that was there to HELP the Iraqis rebuild there infrastructure.

We just watched somebody beheaded because the photo's were released. Whoever released the first bunch should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Now it is rather late and irreparable damage has been done. But to release more inflammatory photos to savages who are obviously insane enough that they may yet again use them an an excuse to kill more innocent people strikes me as a foolish sort of idealism. I think we should announce and admit that there are more photos, state that we are working to bring those responsible to justice, but openly decline to release them because to do so would lend support to a dangerous small group of Iraq's criminally insane.

I see two very good and conflicting arguments, Don_Vito's and Moonbeams.

It troubles me when in a free society we are denied access to judge for ourselves the criminal acts of those who represent us in Iraq. We cannot hide from the world what happened.

The other argument is that these will undoubtedly inflame passions further, perhaps resulting in yet another tragedy. I believe this a real danger.

So how to resolve these conflicts?

Perhaps delayed gratification of a sort. We reach the understanding that in a few months or so these come out, unless they are first brought to light by other agency. We get unfettered access to them, but after a cooling down period. Maybe things won't cool down, but after some time they have to be revealed. I am uncertain as to how effective it would be in satisfying both concerns, but at least this isn't indecisive.

I hope you're talking about the soldiers ("criminals"), not the people in the prision...

The pictures and videos will come out anyway. Also it is always a bad iidea to allow the government to censor or suppress information.

I have a suspicion that all pictures and videos will become Classified materials vital to the nation's security. Accordingly, they will be placed in a bag with Scooter Libby's cell phone records and buried in the southeast corner of the Crawford ranch.

Wow I'm surprised. I definity with the Don on this one. Practice freedom while we still have it or what's left of it.

obviously someone other than the government has them, since some were leaked already. unfortunate as it is, with the communications age we live in now, there's a market for them

Moonie, if this is on the up and up and not your sick attempt at humor, it will most likely be the first and only time we agree....scary, me agreeing with both you and chess in the same thread.

So, you support the rape, murder, abuse, humiliation, etc. of innocent people? (NOTE: 70-90% of prisoners were wrongly arrested.) Also, are you aware that ALL of the photos shown so far are in violation of the Geneva Convention?
