Doesn't matter if it was a shove, or if the player pulled a friggin baseball bat outta his butt and slammed the photog with it...
At sporting events, it's the photographers responsibility to stay well out of the players way. The photog should have moved quicker.
Look, I'm not saying this to be a sh!t... It's part of the press package. You cover a sporting event, you take the risk you're going to get hurt, intentionally or not.
Now if the player was walking out of the locker room and shoved the photog, that would be different.
You don't know crap about that's it like on the sidelines. In every single case I've seen a cameraman get slammed (in basketball, football, whatever) the player (at fault or not) has at least had the common courtesy to lend a hand and make sure the guy is OK. This is one of the more viscous I've seen and the guy didn't even look back. Unacceptable.
Yes, it is a risk being on the field. Much more than many people would think. But respect and avoidance here is a two-way street, these players are not absolved of all responsibility just because they are the reason we are there.
If you look at the end, towards the right side there is a still shooter with a bigass 600mm f/4 lens who is Kneeling. I posted this video on a sports photography website I visited and he happened to post that that guy was him. His response after seeing it with his own eyes and then watching the video? "he did have room to get by the camera guy."
Oh, just saw your first line. "Doesn't matter if it was a shove, or if the player pulled a friggin baseball bat outta his butt and slammed the photog with it..."
Classy.
