***POLL*** Should smoking be illegal?

Our city bylaw has made it illegal to smoke in any indoor public place, regardless of whether minors are present or not. This includes places such as the workplace, bars and casinos. Hospitals will soon be extending this law to their entire property, even outdoors.

I'm just wondering what peoples' thoughts are on this?

**EDIT: Let me know if I've forgotten anything, and if you reply other, what's your answer?

If they redeifined their definition of public places I would support a ban. But casinos and bars? That's a lot different than a hospital or city hall. That should be up to the owners.

I have one problem with the whole idea of banning smoking from the hospital properties, even outdoors: how do they propose to tell a terminally ill patient that No, they cannot have a last smoke before they die. When I questioned some of the authorites about this, they said they would be offering counselling for those that needed to quit.

I think conselling will only result in adding insult to injury.

Also, since they've banned smoking from the casino and bars, it's been much more pleasant for non-smokers. Smokers are given the chance to go into a special smoking area just outside the bar if necessary to light up, then return back inside.

Smoking should be restricted, but not completely illegal. If it were, you'd have Prohibition-style smuggling and organized crime problems all over again, and that would be just plain stupid to get into that situation.

the government should give out cigarettes for free

one small catch, the free cigarettes have some chemical that causes sterilization after smoking a couple cartoons of them

Should be illegalized across the board in public and taxes in turn brought up to the point where smokers are paying for the health costs that they inevitably draw upon the system when their lungs start to rott.

No, the majority of patients in our hospital are there because of a smoking related illness, and if we ban smoking we'll lose money.

Complete sarcasm. I'd like to ban smoking, but I don't think it would work.

Other: All smokers should be put on an island so they can smoke their brains out and when they die we will feed them to wild dogs and hobos.

We have laws in California that prohibit smoking indoors at any public building. I like it that way. I hate going in a place and smelling the stale smell of cigarette smoke. Vegas comes immediately to mind. That place is a smokers paradise. Yuk...

exactly. If a privately owned bar wants to allow smoking then it shouldn't be any business of a person who doesn't smoke.

I would choose the banned in public places, but I need to know your definition of "public"

Should be perfectly legal.
Emissions from cars kill more people yearly with breathing problems than second-hand smoke in Toronto.
Why not ban cars? Whoops that comfort line again...can't cross it. Lets uh...drive econo-boxes and make ourselves feel good that we're only contributing to killing half as many people and preach to everyone that SUVs suck

Now I'm a conservative, and I don't think smoking should be banned anywhere, except for in hospitals, schools and oil refineries, and of course private places that choose to ban smoking. It's not up to the government to decide where one can light up. Second hand smoke is overhyped just as much as global warming. Eating in a smoke filled restaurant twice a week will not kill you.

Where is the choice for "Smoking TOBACCO should be illegal in all indoor public places. Smoking POT should be legal."?

dont forget preaching that smoking is uber-deadly but neglecting the multitudes of people on this board that drive like a-holes sober (and apparently many while drunk)

Its not about it killing, its about it being sick and nasty, and very uninviting for non-smokers.

I HATE eating in a smokefilled restaraunt. Equally so, I hate walking thru smoke clouds of all the smokers who crowd around doorways to college campuses/classes grocery stores, restaraunts, and other places like that. Set aside a place they can smoke, OUT OF THE WAY, and let them kill themselves over there. Standing in the doorway is almost as bad as having them inside.

Quite wrong. It might not kill you, but it will do significant damage to your lungs. Before arguing that second hand smoke is overhyped, please take a look at the lungs of a non-smoker who works in a environment where many smoke daily. They're not too much different than the lungs of a person who smokes a pack a day.

Smoking should be legal in Bars, Casinos, Resturants and so on.
I agree with smoking being banned from offices and other public places.

I really hate the Anti-smoking Nazis.

let them kill themselves. with CA's current laws against smoking in indoor public places, it's no skin off my back if they want to spend all their money on assisted suicide.
