"Kerry for president!" and "jesus loves you!" are both perfectly legitimate signatures, IMO.

I have no problem with the ones you just quoted, but "jew & christian hating socialists have far more in common with hitler & stalin than anyone else." is simply ludicrous IMO and the guy should have to remove it at the very least. Honestly I think that sort of thing is vacation-worthy.

Well Hitler hated Jews, and communist Russia wasn't exactly a bastion of religious freedom... and they were both socialists... so saying that socialists who hate jews and christians have something in common with Hitler and Stalin would be a pretty accurate statement, wouldn't it?

Possibly...

<-- one who sees the merits of socialism but is (trying to be) a devout Christian.

And no, I don't feel such sigs are allowed. :)

Doesn't seem very offensive to me. :Q

To me, he's comparing anyone who votes for the Democrats or any left-leaning party with Adolf Hitler. That's why I find it offensive. It's ridiculous. :p
More importantly, how does Hitler feel about that signature?
I mean, I'm not too concerned about you getting mad, but if Hitler gets pissed off he really carries a grudge.

I suppose, if you look at it that way. Maybe I read it out of context. I took it as meaning ALL people who hold socialist values or political beliefs can be best compared to Hitler and Stalin, and that ALL socialists somehow hate Christians and Jews.

Especially since he doesn't see the extreme ignorance and irony in the fact that if Hitler was alive today, he'd be far right. Heck, he'd be Karl "Bush's brain" Rove's own brain! :)

Of course they should be allowed. It's a slippery slope - start patrolling sigs, and others will follow. What's next, banning words like D*ITB, In Be____ the Lock, and st*b?

Wait a second...

The thing is, don't you guys come here to discuss hardware and to escape the world of politics and religion? I know I do. Then again I work with a religious zealot in a religious school of all places so maybe I'm just especially jaded towards the entire situation. It's sad. I haven't attended church in over a year because of the whole situation. I feel like I'm at church 9-5, 5 days a week.

You do know that sigs can be turned off in your user profile, right? Just because you don't like what someone has to say, it doesn't mean that they automatically aren't allowed to say it.

You've gotta decide what your issue is.
If it's sigs with religious content, then turn them off.
If it's offensive sigs, then complain about them to the mods.

People come here for different reasons. I rarely discuss hardware. Off Topic and Hot Deals are what I read/post to. Why does the entire forum have to change to suit your needs?

Hey can you explain to me, either on here or in a PM, why Christianity seems to contradict Socialism? I'm Christian myself (moderately anyway, I don't know all that much about the faith yet) and I can't figure it out for the life of me. I haven't seen anything in the Bible about taxes. I mean, if the socialist parties suddenly proposed abolishing abortion and all that jazz, would Christians suddenly start to support those parties?

And that is exactly why you have no say in what this forum allows.

If/when I find someone's sig offensive, I usually just think "what an asshat" to myself and move on to the next post.

It doesn't, but that doesn't change the fact that you're using AT for something that it wasn't intended for. In fact, the forums probably changed at some point to suit your needs. Was there always an OT forum? To me IRC and MSN are the places for general chat. This was a hardware review and analysis website the last time I checked.

Why not make accounts just for people that use the OT and P&N forums then, and place no rules whatsoever upon them? Just make it so that they can't go in the precious General Hardware forum though. :p

Ahhhh but the poll is not complete yet. ;)

I suppose I can turn off sigs. I generally like them though and it's a shame to lose a feature because of a few zealots.

Jesus, what is this? Do you think AT is some bastion of freedom and equality? It's an Internet forum and whoever moderates it gets all the say. No one says you have to keep coming here. If you don't like my sig, then the door's here.

Sounds like you are just redicuoluoususly over-sensitive when it comes to religion, due to whatever religious background you have.

Ahh, but the difference is that it wasn't just changed to suit MY needs, it was changed to suit MANY people's needs. It doesn't seem like there are many people here who can't handle turning off signatures if they don't like the content.

Why not just turn off sigs or complain about ones that are flagrantly offensive and let the Mods sort it out? Explain to us why that isn't good enough...

Because I complained to the mods and they did nothing. The one mod agreed with the guy's political/religious views and promptly locked my thread.

I can't imagine someone who would want to visit OT AND General Hardware.

I mean, if the socialist parties suddenly proposed abolishing abortion and all that jazz, would Christians suddenly start to support those parties?

It's a gross oversimplification, but it seems to me that the majority in the country, white conservative Protestant America, seem to favor to some degree ironically, mostly principles which have no Biblical basis... Look at Bush's actions for examples... Abuse of the environment (putting it last in priorities), privatization (neglect of the lower class), larger government and under the table dealings with large companies to create policy, runaway budget deficit, arrogant and unilateral international policies, etc...

These ideas are often identified with Protestant or Christian America not because they are Biblical, but because they are in line with the interests of that demographic.

As for Taxes, Jesus says give to Caesar what is his... This is often misinterpreted however... To me it says that one shouldn't evade taxes and should cooperate peacefully within the constructs of the system he's living in.

As far as socialism, I don't agree with it in practice as a government ideology - and make no mistake about it - everytime its been implemented, its been grossly abused. People have sought power from it and turned it into something totalitarian. The principles of socialism are important however... Above everything Jesus taught love and humility. There is no love greater than self sacrifice - Jesus Himself was the ultimate example.

I challenge any conservative here to find me one example of this in Bush's actions.

I don't need to see that sort of thing when I'm reading a thread about like, digital cameras or what soandso ate for dinner, no matter how minor (ie. "Jesus saves", or something). For the religious & political nuts: you turn off more people who're on the fence than you lure in when you act all zealot-y like that. Just FYI. My vote is for "no".

PS. Anyone up for an autoban feature for people who widen threads? :|
