Yeah... you can only have a baby if the government says you can?
rolleye.gif
Where are we living? China?

So how exactly do you prevent people from having kids? What are the limitations to family size? 1 kid? 2 kids? Nothing like parents killing babies in an attempt to get a "perfect" child because Big Brother says you only qualify to have 1 kid. Does it change depending on income? Do you have to have a certian level of education before you qualify? What if you have a kid w/o a permit? Does the government automatically take that child away? So now the government has more rights to your offspring than you do?

I'm so happy that the majority people who voted in this poll feel it is okay for government to directly control one of the most basic functions/purposes of human exhistance...

Hopefully this is just a first step towards complete goverment control in an attempt to make our lives "better." Obviously some people are better at certian things than others so I feel that everyone should be subjected to a battery of tests to discover our strengths and weakness so we can be assinged an occupation that we are best suited for. Also, selective breeding should be instituted so as not to pollute "good" genes w/"bad" genes." This should lead to a smooth operating class based system where everyone knows their place in life and no one tries to do things they weren't "meant" to do. Think of how much better life will be when all you decissions are made for your...

Dude, read again what was said before; noone is talking about limiting the number of children you can have. Have all the kids you want if you choose to. We're talking about responsible parenting, and the idea that people should be taught the proper ways to care for the child, also keep people accountable for their actions.

The comparison with China is out of context; they instituted licensing for different reasons, to control the staggering growing population. You example doesn't apply here, sorry.

Who would give the test the goverment? Everyone knows they never make a mistake.
rolleye.gif

In theory yes it would be a great idea, but in practice it wouldn't work.

I agree. Something should be done, but who could do it?

Maybe you should have to provide proof of financial capability, just like when you want to involve yourself with any other financial obligation. It wouldn't be as subject to discrimination or individual decision if the cost of raising a child was assessed every year and only those with the ability could get a permit.

We already require this for houses, cars, etc. and when you think about it having the money to maintain a child is more important than having the money to maintain a car. Love is definitely important, but it is definitely not going to raise a child either. It would lessen the burden on each of individually and on society as a whole by making people accountable.

yeah, just what we need. george W and his motley crew telling us who can or can't have kids.

even if you -could- come up with something that works, it would almost certainly be "racist"

We survived for how many thousands of years despite the existence of idiots. I think we can make it.

Besides, who gets to decide the criteria? They're MY children.

I voted no.

I doubt I would've passed any licensing test's considering my previous history. Being a parent has utterly and fundamentally changed my life, it's doubtful that anything else would have.

What's a license going to do? Plenty of idiots drive cars, most have a license. Doesn't stop them from being idiots. Why would parental licensing be any different? Why would licensing automatically proclude them from continuing to be idiots? All this would end up being is a kid tax.

They should be licensed but based on income and dependence on government assistance rather than on child-rearing ability. If you are on welfare there should be a mandatory tubal ligation procedure before you collect your first check. You should not be allowed to have children just to increase your government income. You'll have these gigantic fatass Brooklyn mommas with 12 kids, all neglected, so that they can spend their welfare on booze and crack. Food stamps are a joke too, those just get traded in for cash or used on smokes. Glad 1/2 of my income goes to pay for it.

PS - This post just turned me platinum. Pretty sweet, eh?

Oooh it's close...I say yes....there are a growing number of unfit parents out there and I think it's very unfair on the children....

When I say unfit it can range from anything from violent uncaring parents to a caring parent but who is 15 and it is potentially messing up her life by having a child so young and not intentionally...

Although it of course raises the question of what happens with an unplanned pregnancy if this licensing existed.

I myself dislike children and don't plan on having any....:D

They have cards now and they can't be used for cash or "smokes".

What are you going to do if someone gets pregnant without a license?
Abortion? Ya this country will never ever agree on that one.
Adoption? Well you need a license to have a baby, I am thinking adoption
agencies will have many more kids than parents.
Let them keep it but fine them? Ya thats what you want fine people who probably
are going to have a hard time affording a child anyway.
Nothing? Well then why have a license anyway, if you don't do anything no one will
care.

As far as if a people are ready to have children. How do you really tell. I know a guy
who got his girl friend pregnant at 20. He used to party alot, had alot of fun. When he
found out. He ended up working 2 jobs, more than 80 hours a week saving up for the baby
and I probably guess that though unexpected, the baby was the best thing for him and he is
a great father and his now wife is a great mother.
Yet I know parents that would probably get a license but are the worst parents. Expect nannies
to watch and raise their children.

::sigh::

This is a tough one. I've seen some examples of "bad" parenting already (my parent's neighbors or my brother-in-law and his wife), and it definitely makes me lean towards wanting to license parents. On the other hand, the government is already too in control for my taste.

There's definitely no easy solution to this, but I'd like to at least see some sort of mandatory parenting classes required before you can have a child or if you already have a child. Maybe that would help and maybe it wouldn't. ::shrug::

Also, better educating people about using birth control in the first place might help, as well as making it more available to everyone. How fvcking difficult is it for you to slip a stupid condom on before you have sex? If all the teen mothers in the world had any common sense, there wouldn't be nearly as many "unwanted" children running around.

Hey Zero ... sadly enough we already DO have laws governing where we are allowed to fvck (certainly can't do it in public), walk (only in cross walks or side walks!!) p!ss and sh!t (again, a no-no in public) These are all basic functions and honestly, none of these things would harm another person where as having a child without being able to properly care for the child has PLENTY of potential of harm.

Who says idiots can't clean up their act for 15 minutes and pass the test?

It would be impossible to get a reliable test.

I would be against it anyway.

the test doesn't have to catch every unfit parent... just like driver's tests don't catch every unsafe driver. but it at least catches the people who are so out of it they can't even clean up their act for 15 minutes.

Wow I have been saying this for years, but there would be so many people who would qualify, simply because they have never been trained to be good parents, or their parents did things to them, so they have to do it to their children. And who?s to say if the offspring of unfit parents can't grow up to be stable and loving adults. I mean there are people who are raised very well, but are taught that if you don't marry or associate with someone of your own ethnicity then you are out of the family. Imagine all those people not being allowed to have kids; the world?s population would be cut in half instantly maybe more. This issue is very hard to debate, and unfortunately the government doesn't have programs set up to test the mental capacity of adults before they enter a relationship. I think Nature, though slow, will weed out certain characteristics that are not positive towards the evolution of human nature.:D:brokenheart::camera::clock::camera::brokenheart::D:brokenheart::camera::clock:
