I was watching local news today and caught a story of a 2 year-old toddler found wondering on the street while her mother was boozing with her friends at home. The kid was spotted by neighbours who called the cops. The mother is in police custody and the child is with Protective Serivces.

This, of course, is not a first story of child neglect to make the news, but it made me think. Perhaps, there should be a licesing system for parents. Maybe if people were requierd to attend parenting classes and take exams on basics of child care. What if people had to sign agreements accepting the responsibility for the child's welfare while been warned of consequnces of child neglect, some would think twice before having children.

What do you think? Please be respectful of other's opinions.

It's a good idea but I wouldn't want the government (or whoever) telling me if I can have a child or not.

Some parents definately shouldn't have children, but I don't want the government regulating who should and shouldn't. They're already too involved in our everyday life.

There will always be those parents that truely love their children and will do everything they can to keep them safe, and then there will always be those parents who stopped trying.

Hell no. You're right, plenty of irresponsible idiots have kids and they should have their skin peeled off and tabasco sauce rubbed on them, but I don't want the gov't telling me *if* I can have children.

No

The mistake of a "few" should not take away the "right" of procreation IMO :)

If I am ever made King of the Universe and Everything I will be imposing mandatory sterilization upon such people.

I am usually all for getting the government out of most people's life; but in a way I agree that parents should be given a test. Because, it is not the life of the parents that is going to get screwed over, but the life of the child.

Oh, so now the government not only would run/attempt to control nearly every aspect of a child's life...but they would also say who can and can't have children?

Hell no.

Well, that's not quite how I would look at this. The way I'm thinking: it sucks when government interferes with people's life's pretending that most of us are too stupid to know good from bad, right from wrong. In this case, however, we're talking about children, who must have someone to care for and nourish them.

Exactly, you have to know how to drive and know the rules. To prove that knowledge you take two tests and then you're issued license. Yet somehow, we allow anyone and everyone to have children based on a pure assumption that they know hot to take care of them.

to all of you talking about how government should stay out of our lives... government regulation is something of a necessary evil... it's needed when there's a potential that people will do something that will seriously affect the lives of others. for example, driving tests. we have driving tests because we want every person that gets behind the wheel of a giant speeding mass of metal to know how to operate it. so my question is, you probably nod and say "that's reasonable" to something like driving, but then you go "oh no it's way out of line" for something as serious as being responsible for the physical and emotional well being of another human being?

unless you're against driver's licenses... in which case, meh

It'd be nice to stop all those idiots from mating... but realistically the idea wouldn't work.

You need a marriage liscense... so why not a parenting lisence? I know a lot of parents who could really use a parenting class.
