I am on scholarship, so everything (including rent) is paid for. I am finishing up my BS in Comp Eng./Comp Sci. this semester. If I stay on track, I will have a masters in EE in another year. Is it worth it? Right now, I could start a job making decent money with the degree I have. I am alos burnt out on school.

So should I ditch my scholarship and go do something I will really enjoy, or should I tough it out for my masters? What kind of benefits would I get out of the degree?

Thanks...

Go for the Masters. You'll prolly end up making around 30% more than if you didn't. Maybe an MBA, end up managing engineers sometime down the road, instead of just being an engineer and getting paid less.

The MBA thing is definitely OUT. Even if I make less as an engineer, I will be happier doing something I like. I despise business and marketing types. They have no clue, but still tell me what to do at my job. Only my very immediate 2 managers understood how my projects worked.

Is pay really that different out there? I think avg at my school is closer to BS=$45k and MS=$50k. That is only 10% It would take ten years to make up the difference.

Education is never wasted.

With a schlorship, go for the masters and a PhD if possible.

If you think you are burned out now, work at a job you hate and cant advance from because you dont have the credentials. I went back for mine at age 32.

I understand. I think a PhD is out, as well. I thought about it once, but was told that you are generally unemployable with a PhD. You are considered "overqualified" for most engineering jobs.

Right now my temptation is the money. It is hard to think that I will be missing out on some nice income. So far, the (non-idiotic *ahem*Luchini*ahem*) opinion seems to lean toward me staying. I probably will.

<<generally unemployable with a PhD. You are considered "overqualified" for most engineering jobs>>.

I heard this also.

Ask yourself, "Do you just want a "job"?.

Agreed.

Go for the masters. As you said, it will only take a year. That's not a very long time in the long run.

Go for master.

I received my B.S in CS 2 years ago, and all offers that I received
range from 40K to 50K.
Right now, I am working on my M.S. degree and hopefully will be finished
by June 2001 (took me 2 years since I work part-time). I received many offers
over 70K, some even in the high 90K (and this is not in California or
any high living cost city).
Conclusion ? I don't regret doing my M.S. at all. You need to find
a good advisor though, as they will be the one with good contacts to
industry (high-paid jobs).

are you crazy?

here you are getting a free masters and you don't know if you should go for it? damn, some of us has to work full time, barely affording college. if i were you i wouldn't even think about it twice, i would just go for my masters. plus when you finish you'll have more experience and you'll be getting more money working

If you like school, why not go for it. If you don't like school, you probably won't like it any better.

Money is tempting but if this stuff is all paid for having the masters will ALWAYS be on your resume and could potentially earn you enough extra that you more than pay off for the year's difference in no time. I'd go get it for sure.

poop: go for it now, before you know it you will have too many obligation weighing you down to return to school. You are already there, get all the education you can while you have the time.

how much income would you make if you weren't working on the MS? how much extra income will the MS bring you? in my experience (i have an MS), a BS + full-time experience == MS to most employers, i.e., not a large salary differential. OTOH, some of the more interesting positions/projects want an engineer with an MS.

wait..the masters is covered in the scholarship? if so then definately do it. the advantages of a masters are not found shortly after leaving college. It is after several years of working that you can get a good management position with a masters and this means serious $$$. Stick it out because after many years of working you kinda dont want to go back to college not only because you dont want to stop earning but also because the brain gets worse. Especially after years of stress induced drug and alcohol abuse heheheheehe

I say go for the masters. It's only one year and you said you had a scholarship, so why not do it?

Consider presenting yourself as either "I'm a bachelor" or "I'm a master"- not so difficult to choose eh?
Myself I 'm getting a PhD, I know I'll have a hard time getting a job, but I really don't care right now. Good thing we don't have to pay for the higher education here in Sweden :)
