As a strong Democrat, I am against this recall.
I posted before that I believe that Gray Davis could defeat this recall by campaigning hard against whomever the Republicans put up. However, now that Arnold has entered the race and there are two statewide Democrats seemingly in the race, there is a strong chance that Gov. Davis will be recalled and Arnold Schwarzenegger will be elected. A lot can happen between now and October 7th. But current polls has people in favor of the recall by about 55% to 40% with about 5% undecided. It seems like many people have made up their minds on this matter.

Before the whole election cycle fully swings into gear. Before counties spend the millions of dollars more they do not have on this recall. Should Governor Davis Resign for office?

My personal opinion is that right now, Davis should resign for the good of the people of California and for the Democratic Party both statewide and nationally. It is perfectly legal (as legal as the recall move) and it would prevent the ascension of Arnold Schwarzenegger who then must run in Republican primary in the future if he wants to be governor. It would save the governorship for the Democrats as the Lt. Governor would become Governor.

On the con side:
I do think that by resigning Davis allows the recall proponents to win and we may get an endless cycle of recalls and counter-recalls. It might make more people angry that they were not allowed to vote in a recall election.

But on the whole, I believe that Davis should resign to save his Party.

Well I think he should resign because he's a terrible Governor. I plan to vote for Arnold (not because he's a Rep, because I tend to hate Reps more than even Dems, but because he's an intelligent man and he's passionate about his causes...)

I suppose partywise I stand closest to the Libertarians, but even them I'm not really fond of, because their most vocal representatives are morons like Howard Stern, who neither understands nor cares about the issues he occasionally comments on (when he's not fondling porn stars tits on the radio, that is...) Nevertheless, I mark the "Other" box and fill in "Laissez-Faire Capitalist Pig."

But then, I actually *do* care about the freedom of the world's people, even if they are too stupid not to enslave themselves.

I think every state should have this recall law in place. This way we can force the Dem or Rep to do a better job or we boot him or her out of office. Power to the people, the more we kick out of office the more scared they will become and maybe do a better job.

My understanding is that if Davis resigns, it would allow Bustamante to step in automatically.

It will allow him to become gov, but the election will still occur. Bustamante will just be running from the gov position.

Absolutely, otherwise they have no accountability and the position is as good as a king over an empire.

It sounds like from the reports if he stepped down and turned it over to the Lt Governor that would stop the recall vote since the guy being recalled is then already gone.

To resign would be to allow the nutcase Republicans to bully stomp their way in. No, we go through the election and then we recall Arnold too. We need to tear the whole thing to the ground and start over. Chaos and disaster are the only way.

Wouldn't the point of the recall be moot if Bustamante was acting governor? I understand the election would still proceed, but at minimum it would take the wind out of the sails, so to speak.

I am not sure, but what I have been reading. It appears at this point the election must be held to replace the gov even if he steps down.

Actually, they got 1.6 million signatures of registered voters (about 1.2 million were declared valid). About 7.5 million votes were cast for the office of Governor in 2002. There are at least 3 million registered Republican so you can round up the signatures. You need only 12% or (900,00 valid signatures to trigger a recall vote - that threshold IMO is too low and should be changed). Remember also that Congressman Issa pumped 1.7 million dollars into the recall process (i.e. paid signature gatherers). He basically paid $1 for each signature.

Lastly, Gov. Davis is the current governor. He is the governor unless the voters vote to recall him. Before that vote, he, as governor of CA, could decide to step down and resign. He would then, therefore, not be the governor. The Lt. Governor would fill the position and serve out the remaining term. That person would not be subject to the recall. The recall would be moot because you cannot recall someone who is no longer the governor. If the proponents want to recall the acting governor, they would need to circulate another petition. That is how I see the process.

 Gov Dufas is an embarrasement and is "leaving" one way or another..

He was doing a "good job" in CA when times were good......but then it's pretty hard to screw up when the state coffers are flush with cash.

When times got tough he was tested and proved to be lacking the leadership qualities needed. Time and again he watched and did nothing while crisis escalated. His way of dealing with problems.......do nothing, maybe it will go away.

Well people in CA are fed up with it and are making him go away.
