As a strong Democrat, I am against this recall.
I posted before that I believe that Gray Davis could defeat this recall by campaigning hard against whomever the Republicans put up. However, now that Arnold has entered the race and there are two statewide Democrats seemingly in the race, there is a strong chance that Gov. Davis will be recalled and Arnold Schwarzenegger will be elected. A lot can happen between now and October 7th. But current polls has people in favor of the recall by about 55% to 40% with about 5% undecided. It seems like many people have made up their minds on this matter.
Before the whole election cycle fully swings into gear. Before counties spend the millions of dollars more they do not have on this recall. Should Governor Davis Resign for office?
My personal opinion is that right now, Davis should resign for the good of the people of California and for the Democratic Party both statewide and nationally. It is perfectly legal (as legal as the recall move) and it would prevent the ascension of Arnold Schwarzenegger who then must run in Republican primary in the future if he wants to be governor. It would save the governorship for the Democrats as the Lt. Governor would become Governor.
On the con side:
I do think that by resigning Davis allows the recall proponents to win and we may get an endless cycle of recalls and counter-recalls. It might make more people angry that they were not allowed to vote in a recall election.
But on the whole, I believe that Davis should resign to save his Party.
