:::POLL::: Should cell phones be blocked in certain busineses?

You could conceiveable argue that it might possibly block an emergency call, such as 911 due to heart attack.

But that's without reading the link.

I voted yes though.

see thats the problem. What if someone really needed to make/receive a call?

Should we just let someone die because we dont want to hear someone's cell phone ring while eating dinner?

If there's an actual valid reason as to why cell phone calls should be blocked (interfering with equipment or work) then yes. If it's something as stupid as not wanting to hear the chick next to you on her cell phone while you're eating, no. (It annoys the fvck out of me but hey, they can do what they like)

i wouldn't want it to be, i'm used to them now. As long as the person doesn't pick up and start screaming into his phone.

Like yesterday, I accidently swallowed some mouthwash, and panicked because I knew it was poisonous, so I call up my sister who's with her MD boyfriend and ask if I was about to die or not. He said no, a little bit of mouthwash is fine 😀

If my Dad gets hit by a car while I'm eating in a restaurant, I want to be able to recieve a call to tell me to get my ass to the hospital quickly, not find out 2 hours later once I've finished my meal/drinks that I missed my chance and now he's dead.

just throw food at them

You said certain businesses. Busnisses and installations where those phones should be jammed:

Hospitals
Broadcasting Studios and surrounding equiptment rooms
(this is a big problem where I work. Normally phones are supposed to be off, but you can always forget to do that - the bitch is they interfere with wireless mics and cameras)
...

I wouldn't want them blocked in restaurants, there are many valid reasons to be able to use the phone during a prolonged business meal for example. It's the ringing that pisses most people off, not the fact that somebody is actually talking on the phone. For this a standard is needed: A Transmitter tells all phones in the vicinity to go into vibration mode.

I have been waiting for someone to bring this up. This is the way it should be done. With bluetooth enabled phones its very possibel to do, but no one has caught on yet.

I need my cell to be working at all times. If my son has an emergency, I am the only one who can be reached 100% of the time.

There is something in last months playboy about this technology. Some places in europe are using it to stop remote detonation of bombs by cell or radio transmissions. so i voted yes.

IIRC, the CIA and NSA buildings block cell phones. In fact I think they are banned, they make you turn them in at the door.

Yes, but allow 911 calls.

But, that said, for the life of me I can't figure out who all these people are talking to.

😕

85% of all cell phone conversations run something like this: "I am currently here, and I'm heading there. I should be there in about 20 minutes."

Useless waste of bandwidth, IMO.

Many people were able to say final words to their loved ones before they died.

There's been quite a few instances in emergency situations where cellphones helped, and which would have obviously been banned or blocked if they could at the time (Columbine comes to mind).

I vote no, all cellphones have the option for vibration or silent mode, just implement it. If you don't want cellphones in your restaurant, kick the person out for not silencing it. Same goes for theatres, or anywhere else you want to keep them out. Why force it onto people? It's like smoking, as much as i hate it (and i do think it should be banned lol)... if somebody lights up in a place where it's no smoking, then get booted out or fined, why not institute this same practice?

i voted yes, especially for hospitals where there is sensitive, perhaps life-saving equipment that can be affected.

i think other businesses like restaurants should be free to block cell phones. however, they should then be required to post signs informing patrons that they will not be able to receive cell phone calls.

The owner of a facility should have the sole right to decide whether or not he wants to block cellular signals within the confines of his facility. As long as he puts up signs letting people know so that they aren't caught unawares, I don't see a problem.
