Yes, I think they should learn at least enough English to get buy. Problem is, Americans complaining that others who come here don't speak the language is often hypocritical, because so many Americans refuse to learn other languages before going to other countries.

That sir, IMO, is a horrible argument. Most Americans who go to other countries also come back. As a tourist, I dont care. As a resident, you damn well better speak my language.

If someone moves to the US, it would probably benefit them quite a bit to learn to speak English.

What upsets me more than anything is when I am trying to communicate with someone and they get frustrated with ME because I don't understand Korean/Spanish/etc. I just want to say "Look pal, this is the US. Not Korea/Mexico/wherever the hell you are from. Learn to speak English!!"

If it were the other way around and I was in Korea/Mexico/wherever, I would be expected to understand THEIR language. Why should it be any different when a foreigner comes to the US?

Most immigrants do try to learn english here in the States if given the opp. ESL classes are filled the brim in most places across the US. It shouldn't be a requirement, however that they should learn the language prior to coming to the US. If you tried to enforce that, you'd have no food on the table. All the workers who pick your fruit? yeah...most of them toil in harsh conditions w/o being able to speak english. Your hotel maids? yeah, most of them can't speak english. Still most of them pay federal + state taxes. They also contribute to the economy by buying stuff. Think about this before you ask for your demands.

Oh and as for the guy spray painting...yeah he's an ass...but no more of an ass than the punk teenage kid that can speak english perfectly well who wants to spray for fun.
