Yeah, and it also put the final nail in their site's coffin.

True, but their forum traffic and active membership dropped dramatically. The hardocp articles are few and far between and are a fraction as useful as they used to be. The hardcore members took their offtopic discussion to IRC and other live mediums.

In todays hardware scene, there isn't a whole lot of use for hardforum type of sites. The most powerful hardware is dirt cheap and enthusiasts have little to talk about except games and case mods. That's just the natural evolution of the hardware scene.

Exactly; computers don't exist in a vacuum, they exist in the context of people's lives. ATOT is about this context.

Wow: 169 yes, 258 no. I'm surprised the margin is that close.

I voted no, I think OT has a lot to offer, if you're willing to sift thru the silt.

If the Off Topic forum were to disappear, I would say the other AT forums would take a hit as well.

That was a question I posted in the "Change of culture here" thread her209 :)

i honestly welcome the discussion and advice that is brought about in ATOT. if i take a brief look at my bookmarks, i have a variety of threads that i like to check on often, including recipes, headphone advice, firefox extension advice, a few really addictive games, links to wallpaper threads, DSLR discussions, and the like. it's not like a recipe for a good marinated steak fits better in the "video" forum.

i'm not really commenting on that thread for good reason, since i see both sides of the coin. but obliterating ATOT is something i am very much against.

if the moderators are gonna keep crying about OT being a cesspool, they should just shut it down.

Cleaning up some of the discourtesy and stupidity in OT: good.

Deleting it entirely: mistake.

I almost never start a thread in OT, but I enjoy reading other people's threads and posting in them now and then. AT forums would be a bit less fun if I only had Gen Hardware and Software to hang out in.

Without off topic Anandtech would die.

I beleve for a majority of us, after we stop being pimple poppers we lose interest in computers. I know I outgrew my geekness at about 16, and the only reason I still come here is to ask the occasional Tech Support question, and to browse ATOT.

ATOT would lose alot of advertising if say, half the amount of people came.

QFT if they cant moderate it then it shouldn't be.

I came for computer help and stayed for the HD's then migrated into the proffessional OT however it has gone downhill.

Make a new forum, off topic unmoderated. Let everyone who is nuts go nuts in there. And then moderate the regular off topic heavily. Possibly banning transgressors from all forums except the unmoderated one. Or something. Wait is transgressors a word or did I just make that up?
