I wouldn't be bothered *at all* if they actually argued politics. The trouble is that they go in there and *everything* is some kind of tinfoil hat conspiracy. So you want OT closed because it's too, ehh... off topic? Or is it because you miss the old timers and are growing tired by the amount of baby neffers? I hope not because that's just clique-ish, a thinly veiled variation of a popularity contest.
If BW is an issue then I must be missing the point of what the purpose is of having forums. I had always assumed it was a way to derive more ad revenue and web site traffic. Yes there are *allot* of new neffers but how is that not a good from a revenue stand point?
Besides, not that it hasn't already been pointed out but if people are growing tired of the way AT forums are evolving (old timer or not) then either accept it or move on. Don't try and ruin for others what they (and I) consider a good thing.
Although I'm sure we're speaking in a strictly hypothetical context so take my post with a grain of salt if it rubs you wrong.

No, and for one simple reason... profit. Anandtech is partially driven by advertizing like most other websites. If we get rid of off-topic I bet at least half or more of the active posters will dissapear as they will have nothing to post that actually contributes to the other forums.
While you might think this is a good thing, just think of how many fewer accidental clicks there will be on all those annoying, flashing ads! Without noobs and butterfingers clicking on those links, Anandtech would fold and we would all be wondering what to do with all our newly discovered free time. That void that had been ATOT would consume us from within and eventually result in 100,000+ mindless, former IT admin/16 year old virgin zombies. The world would be torn apart and all would come to an end...
Or everyone would simply post in P&N instead and the ending result would be the same.
