Poll: Should a blinker be required for turn ONLY lanes?

I just got a ticket for not signaling in a right turn only lane :|. I signaled to get over, but it went off at the light while I was waiting (no turn on red). SO when I turned I wasn't signaling!

I think that there is no reason that a person should even have to signal in a turn ONLY lane. I mean what else are you going to do? The signal is to let others know what you are doing, but if you HAVE to turn then what you are doing should be obvious and not require a signal right...?

PS: this was in Detroit, Michigan

Theoretically I imagine you're supposed to use your blinkers at all times (when turning obviously) even if you are in a turning lane.

I don't know though, I'm not a liscensed driver, so my 2 cents are probably far from accurate...

think about what their purpose is...how the hell is a pedestrian supposed to know it's a turn only lane? Just put the blinker on when you turn, make it a habit.

I guess you have never seen people change their minds and shoot out of a turn lane and go straight. Turn signals should and are required anytime you vary from a straight path.

I think about that every single time i'm in a turn only lane! I agree, I don't think you should have to because, like you said, everybody knows where you're going. If I were you, I would contest the ticket.

I would just go to court and bring up the fact that you were in a turn ONLY lane. I don't know if it is infact a law, but I would still contest it, if not to win, but at least let them know that you believe it should be changed. That cop must have been below his quota if he's going to stop you for something like that. Did he turn with his blinker on?? :)

Hey riddelrp, if you think the Detroit cops are bad, try driving in Sterling Hts.

I got two tickets within a week. Normally I wouldn't even have gotten the tickets except that it was the end of the month:|

got the ticket "taken care of" by a cop friend ;):D

Have I ever driven in the city? Hello, I am six minutes from Detroit! I live in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the nearest "middle of no where" is at least 45 minutes away.

In response, I almost always signal, it is a habit. And yes people do change their minds, but they are just dumb and I shouldn't pay for that.

Also, pedestrians don't have to look hard to see a giant curved arrow or hanging sign, plus most people walk in areas familiar to them so they know what lanes are turn only.

And for Sterling Heights . . . HA! Those cops are a joke . . . talked out of a 22 over in construction! Never use the speed limits there.

I can not believe I was pulled over in the city where "speed limit" = "speed recommendation."

I invite all AT peps to come drive in Michigan :).

-Ryan, WOOT, I STILL have a clean record, this is sad

It never hurt to turn on the blinker whenever you try to turn, keep away from bad habits. Also inform other people who don't see the turn ONLY lanes that you are turning

just turn your blinker on whenever you're turning or changing lines and you won't have any problems in the future.

yes a blinker should be required for a turn only lane. like someone said how does a pedestrian know you're turning?

when you turn, turn on your blinker. its a law.

What about people that aren't from the area. You are saying that everyone who drives alongside of you is from that area and noone ever travels? They won't necessarily know all the lane designations if from another place.

I think it should be a habit with all drivers. What if it is nighttime and you cant exactly see the white markings on the road that says -> ONLY?

But a ticket for this??? That is plain money grubbing there.

The pedestrians aren't watching the signs, they're looking at the cars with no blinkers trying to figure out which way they are going to go.:D

I always drive over speed limit in Sterling Hts:) The advantages of knowing the judges;)

But it still is a PITA going to court though.

I think it's funny that a lot of you people with LICENSES don't know whether this is a law or not. In my experience as a passenger people are more likely to signal from a turn-only lane than from a regular lane (turn and straight). Besides, according to the licensed drivers I know "If there's no one behind you, you don't have to signal" :disgust:

No wonder I don't drive.

Using blinkers is an instinct for me, I automatically use them no matter where I'm at. Even when taxying in the plane I still reach for the blinkers.

My new road rules:

I signal when I want to signal
I go the speed that pleases me
I stop if I feel like it
I yield only if I have to
I get bonus points for hitting pedestrians <--- This one is a JOKE
I win a free slurpee run if I spray pedestrians with puddle water <--- This one is NOT a JOKE
I change lanes as long as my car length plus 5 inches are available where I want to go
I park where I want to ... "no parking" - WOOT!
knowing the cops is better then knowing judges, saves you time of going to court!
Red lights in Detroit are a joke
Bike cops are funny :)
Left on red is OKAY, just be careful!
Person with bigger balls gets right of way
If you have a lead car (someone in front of you) go as fast as them, they'll get the ticket :)

-Ryan - none of these apply in Grosse Pointe, my city is the exeption to lack of enforcment in Michigan, but I know the cops . . .

It's a blinker. What is the purpose of a blinker? To show someone is turning right or left. When someone is in a turn-only lane, they are going to turn. Therefore, you use the blinker showing that you'll turn. It should be used whenever a turn is being made, no matter what type of lane someone is in. Granted I forget a few times, it is still meant to be used for the sole purpose a single blinker has.

Ok, what about this one: should it be required on Exit Only lanes? I mean you are on the highway, and technically speaking, you aren't turning anywhere.

Ok, to get into the lane signal, then to get out at the top signal if you want to get over, straight = no signal.

Entrance ramps - signal if you need to get into the onramp lane. Then stop! If the lane merges into the right (or left) lane then of course you are getting over! If the lane doesn't end then yes signal again.

-ryan ok, with all my $.02 added up I think I have hit about $10.00 so this is all for tonight
