As a student, I can't wait to have a holiday. And when one is finished, I'm waiting for the next one to come. The fact is, we don't care about what is celebrated... as long as we have a day off... Proof? Christmas... Birthday of Santa Claus??? Or is it for this guy that nobody is talking about anymore??

No, 9/11 shouldnt be a holiday BUT there should be a quiet 5 minutes everywhere to remember this tragic event. Maybe we'll lurn to have respect for those innoncent who tryed to save others.

<< I think is not quite sober enough. >>

Ahem...I think you mean somber....or do you? 😉

😱 sorry... I'm at work on Saturday and very not awake. That works. But with sleepy-logic, sober works as well. 😛

No

We need to move on.

I have read an even worst idea. Someone sent me an email advocating national (forced?) and school prayer (Christian of course) because of the Sept 11,2001 attacks. I hope the First Amendment stands up to that stupid move.

<< There are many, atomic bombing in hiroshima and nagasaki are good examples, I believe the bombing of Dresden also killed many, but I'm not sure if that can be boiled down to a one day event. >>

The dropping of the atomic bombs was justified. Millions could have died if we had to invade Japan, there would have been massive casualies on both sides.

Umm, didn't Britian do most of the city bombing in WW2?

We're talking about American deaths. Since when has American had holidays of deaths of the enemy?

<< Heart disease and cancer also kill thousands in this country each day, I don't think anyone can objectively say that anyone's death is more tragic than another. If you lose your husband/wife/father/mother/sister/brother it's still a loss. >>

Since when was cancer considered mass murder? So a death isn't more tragic if you watched it on life tv? Imagine watching a loved one being killed on live tv, wouldn't that be worse than not seeing it? I think so.

"First, the key facts about the bombing of Dresden on the night of February 13-14, 1945, 10 weeks before Germany's surrender, when everyone knew that Germany was beaten: Dresden was a beautiful Baroque city known as the Florence of the north. It had no war industry and little military value. Its population of 630,000 had been doubled by German refugees, mainly peasants from Silesia fleeing the Red Army.

The concerted British and American attack dropped 650,000 incendiary bombs, causing a firestorm engulfing eight square miles and killing an estimated 135,000 men, women and children."

I agree with others that national holidays have largely become a reason to get off of work and sell cheap souveneirs and picnic items. This day will not be forgotten, we do not need a law to remind us.

I hope not, because it would probably end being abused just like any other national holiday. If one ever came to pass, I'd imagine hearing the following things five years from now:

Little kid: "Wow, I love "9/11 Day! I get off of school, and get play X-Box 2 games all day! All the exploding buildings and stuff on TV are cool, too!"

Commerical: "SAVE, SAVE, SAVE! Show your patroitism and honor the 9/11 victims today by saving BIG money on a 2007 Ford! Every vehicle is ON SALE, and we're giving away FREE American flags with every purchase! Stop in TODAY!"

Just thinking about it makes me feel sick to my stomach.

<< No. And if there is none for Pearl Harbor, there should be none for 9/11/01. Period. >>

Pearl Harbor was an attack on a military base. 9/11 was an attack on thousands of civilians AND our military HQ. Got brain?

I'm all for it, as long as there's no 9/11 sales.[/i] >>

Doom, I know this affected you more then most people but that was a little overboard. How can you say the 2,390 who died in Pearl Harbor are any less deserving of a memorial day? 9-11-01 will never be forgotten. A simple notation in calendars is all that should be needed to remember.

<< No. And if there is none for Pearl Harbor, there should be none for 9/11/01. Period. >>

<< No, 9/11 shouldnt be a holiday BUT there should be a quiet 5 minutes everywhere to remember this tragic event. Maybe we'll lurn to have respect for those innoncent who tryed to save others. >>

definitely a better idea. we don't need a whole day off to remember 9/11....but it would be nice if everyone in america shared a couple of moments together every 9/11 to remember it.

<< NO! I'm sick of hearing about it. Let's move on and put it behind us. Remember the day, but move forward. We need to look FORWARD, not BACKWARD... >>

<< I think we should expand memorial day to cover those killed by terrorists. >>

That's an interesting idea that deserves some thought.

<< I voted yes, but not a day off.. more like a rememberance day. >>

Yeah, cause 9/11 is gonna roll around each year and the media isn't going to remind us to take a moment anyway....hell, they're still honoring princess Diana
