*POLL-Selling your P4c to get a Athlon64?

So yeah, now we know the athlon64 is going to be impressive, very impressive. So... whos thinking of ditching their p4c to get a athlon64? Cause after buying your P4c, i know you aint got money for another system.

only reason im asking is cause i just got my p4 - 2.6c not even 3 months ago, but the athlon64 makes me wanna sell anything i can to get one.

Once 64-bit computing becomes industry's standard I will get a true 64-bit chip. Meanwhile I will stay with the flow and play the waiting game. Athlon64 will rock no doubt but Intel won't just stand and watch. Prepare for a battle boys and girls.

yeah, true true. but well what i meant to say was, are you guys planning on selling your current barton/xp/p4/p4c rigs to get a new prescott or athlon64 rig? Or are you going to stick with what you have until it has become too slow to play games and run applications and so on. i would like to sell mine, but i just got it, i havent even had time to play the games ive wanted yet. the only thing holding my back right now is my video card, i figure when half life 2/doom 3 come around, a good video card with my rig should play it just fine.... if it doesnt i think id be pissed as hell. cause i spent alot of good money on building this rig.

Dude, you are worst than me. 😉 I have to have it but I might not need it... Story of my life but this time I'm playing it cool for a change. 64-bit computing needs a 64-bit operating system and 64-bit apps and games. Intel believes it will take somewhere between 2005 and 2007 for this to happen. I believe they are right and that's why there is no rush to get Athlon64 or even Intel64 for a long while yet. Let me tell you how I deal with cases like these. I don't sell my rigs, I just collect them and when the time comes to build a 64-bit rig, I will just add another to that collection and don't worry about selling anything. If you don't have an Ati 9800P or an nVidia 5900U yet, I suggest you get one...

So how many boxes have you got - I am up to 6 (all working and in use) and am forced to stop for now.

7 as we speak...
2 x Intel (2.6C and 2.4C)
3 x nForce2 (Tbred 1700 , 2100 and Barton 2500)
1 x Via (Athlon 800)
1 x Sis (Tbird 1330)

Im ditching my AXP rig when Athlon 64/FX prices become reasonable 🙂

What I really wanna know is.. THUGS, are you going to really skip Prescott? And if so, gunna try an Athlon 64...? 😉

yeah, ill eventually get a better video card, but amazingly this mx440 plays everything fine thanks to the cpu power. but once i get the funds to get a better video card, ill surely have it. btw, when do the next ati/nvidia cards come out.

I guess you dont plan on playing Half-Life 2. That MX will not cut it.

I still feel like I get stupidly fast performance out of my lowly Tbred rig. What I have read about the Prescotts does get a little drool going and the latest preview of possible A64 performance definitely raised my eyebrow. I plan to ride my current setup through next spring(~6months) and let dust from the upcoming Intel/AMD rumble settle and see what the facts are at that point.

hey, howd my name come up in this thread? 😉

basicly i have no plans for anything ATM. i am keeping a close eye on Prescott tho. the 1mb cache is worth about 500 cpu mhz, and the 2.8D (?) is gonna be nice and cheap for OCers.

i am already skipping the p4C chips, so my upgrade path will be wide open if the current moboards dont support prescott.

😀

yeah, but i plan on getting a card once it gets released. 😀

the initial numbers don't really impress me so far.... and the price for the Athlon FX for example is going to be something like $800 so no thanks. Unless amd undercuts intel which I don't think will happen I'll still go for a p4

There are tons of links around with price estimates. I say estimates since AMD can always change the price if they wish.

Here is one extreme. To convert from pounds to dollars multiply by 1.59: 620 pounds * 1.59 = $985.
Here is the other extreme listing it as more than $650.

Basically we will have several Athlon 64s. The Athlon FX (which a preview discussed earlier showed it having a 40% to 50% boost over the current 3rd fastest P4) will be released next year and is essentially an Opteron. The current top single processor Opteron costs $669. There will be virtually no difference between the two processors, so I think $669 is as good of an estimate as we have.

Actually shoprbc.com is where I get most of my stuff. They obviously have stock of the Athlon64 3200+ and the Athlon64 FX-51 from their suppliers but amd told tell to remove the pre-order links and prices. So prices are not going to be a real suprise. Hard reported on it Sept 3rd.

I agree that the FX will be faster than the Intel 3.2 but you are really going to pay premium for it.
