I always thought it was stupid that they assumed that just because you had a beeper you were a drug dealer. Fvckin retards.

Number of kids in my highschool who had cellphones and left them on in class: 3
Number who were later arrested on charges of Possession with Intent: 3

100% accuracy rate IMO. 😉

I graduated 2 years ago, so they did this to us in JHS.

no reason for kids to be so 'connected' at school where they should be there to learn from their instructors.

its a distraction plain and simple...anyone arguing otherwise isn't seeing clear enough.

We didn't need cell phones in our school days.

If there ever is an "emergency" then call the school, make the school accountable for the safety and whereabouts of children....doesn't that seem reasonable?

hmmmm I don't buy the "convenient" argument either. If you have to coordinate after school activities then do that in the morning, make the kids understand the importance of scheduling and meeting their commitments...rather than calling them up and asking "what are you doing? where are you going?"

I mean, as a parent, shouldn't you already know that? and if not....why not?

Because you are a New Millennium Parent, where electronics takes the place of actual supervision.

Oh, and that "GPS-enabled requirement" phone crap is seeping its way into Canada. Yet another reason for me not to own one.

- M4H
yeah, such a bad parent to want to be able to quickly get in touch with their child...
do you suggest a parent go along with their child to school? and to soccer practice? i mean, we cant leave them unsupervised now can we... sometimes getting your child on the phone is the BEST supervision you're gonna get...

What did parents do in years past? They called the school. Maybe that would make parents think twice before calling for some stupid a$$ reason like "Pick up some chicken on the way home."

well thanks because you just proved my point..

It wasn't always like that, look back even 10-15 years ago it wasn't always like that.

so we started down this road, wonder where it's going to lead us?

"There's a feeling across the land that it just ain't a big deal anymore," said William Scharff, president of the American Association of State Policy Services, a national association of school boards. "More and more states are taking a liberal attitude towards kids carrying phones."

And we wonder why our school systems are screwed up.

So? Letters used to have to be carried across the country on a pony. Now we have idiots posting OMGFREEIPOD on here every 5 minutes. BAN THE INTERNET? The convenience of cell phones just cannot be debated. Of course kids should not use them at school, nor should parents call them at school. but that has nothing to do with them being able to have them. possess != use.

If you're not gonna use it, then why possess it?

same logic goes for guns, antique cars, that 8th spindle of free cd-rs and tons of other things (even stuff at school). the real question is, so what if you arent going to use it? is that really justification to say you CANT possess it?

sure, just trade in actual parental supervision for convenience. you seem to be OK with that, I'm not.

It's interesting to see the comments on here.

I should have set up the poll differently.

Something like this:

I am in school - Yes
I am NOT in school - Yes
I am in school - No
I am NOT in school - no

Seriously though, as busy as wife & I are & as many after school activities as our kiddos are involved in, the cell phones save us lots of time & are convenient.

Although the oldest daughter's 3K test messages in July did piss me off a little

50% of them were probably in class...

Maybe not 😉

I had a cell-phone in HS my senior year. Paid for it with my own money, no contract, etc. All my friends did. We used it to keep in contact during lunch hour (where to go to eat etc) and would rarely use it during school besides that. As long as people are disciplined for using them in class when they shouldnt be, it really shouldn't be a big deal having it in your jean pocket, purse, backpack, whatever.

Why does a high schooler need a cell phone in class? I never needed one back in the 90's in high school. You're there to learn, not to answer phones.

when i was in high school, the big deal was allowing walkmans and discmans in school. it was the same argument, they arent necessary for learning. eventually the rule changed, you could bring it to school and use it during lunch and study halls if you liked.

i think it should be that way with cell phones too, if you kept it on vibrate, and didnt use it except during lunch or study halls, i think it should be ok.

In jr high I wasn't even allowed to wear a hat or chew gum. I didn't even get to have a phone in my room until I was 15. Cellphones can stay in the locker nuff said.

I didn't have a cell phone because they weren't so cheap then, but in high school I did have a pager because I was often not going home directly after school and this way my parents could contact me if they needed me or wanted to know where I was.

Being in contact with your child when you are not around IS SUPERVISION. Dont forget this is HIGH SCHOOL. kids have cars, go on dates, go to parties. do you expect the parents to go along and supervise these activities? being able to find out where your child is and who they are with is being a good parent.

idiots in college forget to turn off that crap in class... im sure high school studends wont EITHER...

No they shouldn't ban cell phones? I think you meant yes they should.

I don't think they should ban them outright, but certainly ban their use during school hours with graduated punishments for each time it rings in class.

idiots abuse every single convenience, freedom and privilege known to man. still not valid excuse to outlaw it

That's bullshit. Nobody should get away with interrupting class like that.

In my high school you were in big trouble if your cell phone went off, in college unfortunately not much happens. In CS class they make you dance though.

I don't even have a cell phone, heh.

Ban 'en comepetely, everywhere. Friggin' annoying affectations of people who think they are cooler or more important than everybody else. Keep them at home along with your tiolet.

Ok, just look @ the logistics, 75 kids in band are excused @ varying times in the evening, all @ the same time. Without a cell, my daughter would have to wait in a long line to use 1 of 3 phones that might be available to her, or I can go to the school parking lot & watch the Color Guard perform Grease for the 300th time for 1/2 an hour because they're late being released again.

Also, although rare, it's a security issue, school shooting, etc, call 911.

(be kind I'm really a luddite, my wife made me buy them😱 )

I didn't have them when I was in school (class of 94), but I did have a pager. I don't see why the phones need to be banned in school, but they certainly should not best used in class. Just set some rules for their use. If you break it once, it's a warning, twice it's detention, three times, phone is taken away, and you aren't allowed one the rest of the school year.

I don't get why some in here insist that it is bad parenting for a parent to give a kid a cell phone though. Technology and lifestyles change, people take advantage of it. Hell, the telegraph worked fine, why don't we get rid off all this telephone and email mumbo jumbo, we got along fine before it. Feet work fine, why do we need cars? Just because something worked fine iin the past, doesn't mean we can't do it differently now or in the future.
