Hah, I actually have to throw part of it out in the street - then do a 2nd perpendicular pass to put it back up on the curb. It's not really any extra work because I have to go that way anyway to clear in front of my mailbox.

If you leave it out in the street, it's just going to turn into an ice patch, right in front of your house. It's a shortcut, but you certainly don't win.

Just cleared 8" of snow on my driveway. Hopefully the snow plow comes through when I am awake so I can tackle that ice wall asap.
 
If you live in NH, it should be expected that snow needs to be blown for people to go to work.

If it snows an epic fuck ton from 9pm-3am, and you work at 4am..how the hell does anybody expect you to get to work? If the neighbors don't want to deal w noise, tell them to wake up and shovel your driveway then.

Also, what is a "loud noise" classified as in your town as far as dB's are concerned? If they really want to bitch and make a scene, get them to measure the noise you actually make and see what the local law says. I'd literally laugh out loud if local laws just said "loud noises". There has to be some dB limit. Maybe your blower is loud, but still theoretically be 1dB under the limit, and be legal.
 
Noise ordinance is there as a law on the books to toss at jackasses doing jackass things. It's not there to punish people doing what they need to do to maintain basic civil infrastructure.

Do you really want a hospital based healthcare provider, a first response volunteer (fireman or paramedic), a cop or any other core service employee skipping out on work because they are breaking a noise ordinance before they are supposed to report to their shift?

Not everyone works cushy 8-5 office jobs you can VPN into. I was out at 5:00AM running a diesel tractor to plow my drive and cul de sac so my wife could get into the hospital today. In the spirit of the thread, blow me.:colbert:

You have to shovel your sidewalk, but I've never heard of an ordinance about a driveway.
 
I like how this forum can go into huge tirades about the pussification of America while at the same time dispensing advice about the proper time to run a snow machine (on the basis of 9-5 white collar work of course).

Just know your place like the Californians and be smug about your local climate, don't pretend you know more than you do. (again like a Californian, so maybe that was a bad example)
 
Not rude, I think most people here will do it (MN). Shit has to get done to go to work, I don't care if one of my neighbors has to do it and I wouldn't expect them to care about me. That being said, I usually throttle mine down a bit in the morning. I leave for work anywhere between 6-7 and don't get home until 6. I don't have time to screw around with a shovel, especially if my wife needs to go somewhere that day.

I would imagine every town that has regular winter snow has this ordinance.

Saw someone using a leaf blower to clear snow in early January when it snowed during the polar vortex. Super light stuff that never got close to melting.

So because your wife works totally offbeat hours, it becomes everyone's problem? It's not like they don't make other devices that solve your problem without you imposing yourselves on everyone else. They're called shovels.

Yes, I think running a snowblower in a community setting early in the morning is a dick move. OP doesn't say what qualifies as "early AM" though. If it's 7am during the work week, then no, not a dick move, because that's a pretty normal time for everyone to be awake. If it was 4AM, then yes, it's a totally selfish/dick move.

People who can't be considerate of close neighbors ought not to have close neighbors. Suburbs are not for you.

Spoken like someone that doesn't deal with snow. I live in a cul de sac. I can barely hear the city's snow plow when it comes. You can barely hear the small engines in a well insulated house. The person pushing the snow blower will have ringing ears though.

People that don't understand the need to move snow quickly and efficiently shouldn't live in places with snow. Snow blowing changes a 2 hour shoveling job into a 30 min job.

This thread is a civil war of words. Snow people vs non-snow people. Apparently I'm now a New Englander.

I did it at 11PM last night... with a shovel.

This whole I need to get out of the house, so everyone can suck it is the same selfish attitude that motivates narcissistic assholes to stop traffic in the far right lane because they just realized they need to make a left turn. So we all get to wait while said asshole finds a way to get 3 lanes over in moving traffic to make the turn. And just like these assholes could have just gone up to the next block and turned around the right way - without imposing their own problems on everyone else - the OP's neighbor could have used a shovel.

This whole mentality that "I have a problem, so everyone else can suck it" is a core problem with our society and is a fundamental symptom of everyone looking out for #1.

- You argue as if the snowblower is the only way to move snow.
- You act as if making a fucking U-turn in the middle of 4 lanes of busy traffic is the only way to turn around.
- You act as though the 10-items-or-less lane is the only place to pay for your two carts of groceries.

The list goes on and on. If you live in a cookie-cutter tract-housing community, you kind of gave up the right to blow snow / mow your yard at 4AM, regardless of your personal circumstances... "your" and "personal" being very key words.
 
OP, what you need to do is knock on your neighbour's door several mornings in a row, at 4:30AM. Each time, ask him to use the snowblower on your driveway.

Eventually he will start slamming the door in your face and tell you to use the blower yourself. He will be woken up by the blower but glad you are not at his front door.

LOL 2 hours? If you're a weak old man with a sketchy back, maybe. I can shovel my whole driveway, sidewalk, and walkway in 30 minutes flat. If I'm in a bind and just need to get out, then I only shovel what I need to... 10 minutes, 15 tops.

It's 12" of snow that consisted of a 1" top layer of solid ice and dense wet snow underneath. Snowblower not required. Then again, I'm not broken. And that's just what I have on-hand right now to demonstrate the capabilities of a shovel. I'm 36 years old and and have shoveling snow since I was 10. I've never needed a snowblower.

It would take me ten minutes to clear that little thing, using a tongue depressor. I would hardly even call that a driveway. It's sort of an extended parking spot.

As for the rest of your post, you're basically saying (along with Alky I'll add) that the poor bastard who has to be out clearing snow at 4:30 AM should feel bad about interrupting your peace and quiet.

I'll leave it at that.
