.pdf at first, and if the company is interested in you they will probably ask for the .doc versions (to just copy/paste into their database).

Unless they ask for a specific format, PDF. Anything else is just unprofessional.

TXT or RTF!

If the other person doesn't have Acrobat or an earlier version of Word than you, the PDF or Document will not open correctly. If they have ANY issue whatsoever of opening your attachment, they won't waste their time, and will simply move on to the other 1245 they received. It has to be simple, it has to be fast, it has to be text! Time is money!

(This is what I've been told by recruiters.)

Can they parse the words from your pdf document to put into their database?

90% of the postings I have seen ask for .doc resumes. My guess was because they can easily get it into their database and do keyword searches on it.

Save as .rtf or as Office 95 and greater .doc.

They probably won't waste their time if you misspell waste either.

Depends entirely on the company. Some prefer DOC, some prefer PDF, and some prefer ASCII. I prefer to use PDF if I'm given the option. ASCII second and DOC third. DOC files can look really different on some computers, especially if they are imported into another application. ASCII files don't need to look nice, so there are fewer formatting concerns. PDF will look the same no matter what, which is nice.

If you use DOC files, be sure to password protect the file before sending it so that it can't accidentally get edited.

I had mine in HTML. If you open it in any browser and print it comes out perfect.

It turns out that if you open the same .html document in Word that it completely fubars the thing. It turns it from a 1 page slick document in to a 4 page nightmare. Who would do that you ask? My current employer did.

most practical: DOC
best looking: PDF

If a resume was requested of me and no particular format was requested, I'd stay on the safe side and provide a .doc.

FYI you no longer need to post a "results" option in your poll. It is right there next to the "Vote" button

:D

Actually, what I do is send a TXT version in the e-mail (no need to spend time opening an attachment) but ALSO include links to my web site so the person can directly download the PDF versions of my Englsh and German resumes.
