Poll: Republicans Are Happier Than Democrats
Wed Mar 15 2006 10:14:36 ET

The Pew Research Center recently updated a question about happiness that the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago has been asking since 1972.

In every asking of the question, ROLL CALL reports, Republicans have been happier than Democrats.

Republicans tend to be better off than Democrats, and that is one explanation for the happiness gap. But when the researchers controlled for household income, Republicans at all income levels were happier than Democrats at those same income levels.

As for ideology, conservative Republicans were happier than conservative Democrats, and moderate to liberal Republicans were happier than comparable Democrats.

"Blissful ignorance"? sounds about right to me.

Ahh, sludgereport, not surprising, a bastion of ignorance.

Have a comment to add? A point to make? You know mods do require OP feedback instead of just copy and paste.

Excessive and misdirected paranoia tends to reduce individual happiness.😛

You should work on that, Must suck to be you then. Try laying off the am radio.

Anal cysts do not make happiness 😉

Nope, the oxycontin sure does help though. 🙂

It's easy to pass this off as just a matter of you being more moral than others, but some people are simply happier and more positive with better belief in self.

I think many democrats/liberals are this way because they believe there needs to be change in society, because they are dissatisfied in some way... its not always righteous and pure dissatisfaction.

Not that dissatiscation with the status quo hasn't resulted in tremendous benefits for all of us today

Isn't this a repost or a repost?

If I wanted to be "happy" I guess I would find Jesus, move to an all white suburb and drive a SUV with a yellow ribbon magnet. I'd rather be informed and upset.

I think it also has to do with who's in power at the time. Right now, the Repubs are, so the Dems are going to have more angst. It would be interesting to see what the results would have been back when Clinton was president and the Dems had the House.

less concern about fellow man, out for ones self, yup, that would make someone 'happier'

Don't forget trashing of the U.S.

Oh yea, and little or no concern for the environment, you can rape it to fill your pockets.
And I can never tell when you're being sarcastic, dammit.

I'm very happy, but I dont belong to either party... In terms of votes, I've probably voted about 70% republican, and 30% democrat. it hasn't been until recently that I've begun to favor one versus the other. the dems just dont seem to know how to stay focused and deliver a clear message these days...

Yes we all know that marching in lock step repeating the same talking points is a message. "Terri is alive!" "Deficits don't matter" "They attacked us on 911"". You overlook years of Republican mistakes, mismanagement and screw ups and then say the Democrats have no "message" or "focus"? Maybe you should go back a few years to the old school conservatives who boasted about personal responsibility and try asking where it went in today's GOP. Republicans sure know how to win elections, too bad they cannot govern or manage. But as long as your type gets their wars and military budget you are behind their incompetence 100%.

But that same reasoning applies to the Democrats as well. Against outsourcing (less concern about others in poorer countries, especially those who look different so they don't consider them fellow man), out for ones self (wants government to provide them services).

I wonder what people who don't solely identify with one party would poll as. I think not being a member of a foul organization would make you happy.

When civil liberties and rights are being taken away seemingly unnoticed in this country, where the 4th Amendment doesn't matter anymore, unwarranted searches and seizures of property are taking place, having a larger deficit than anyone could imagine, and spending $500 billion on a war that we shouldn't be in is happening all at one time, why shouldn't we be happy, eh?

my goodness, you're right! maybe we should legalize euthenasia for those clinically diagnosed as "unhappy." Then all your troubles would melt away and the optimists who believe America's best days are still ahead (thanks Ronnie) can accomplish even more.

Are these types of things common here? When you fail at clear, concise debates about issues, you attack a fictious assumption of ideology that I don't hold? Never did I say I was a pessimist. Actually, I can't wait until a Democrat gets in office and attempts to correct all of these mistakes Bush has made.

When you fail at clear, concise debates about issues....

______

its called dead-pan humor, something most liberals don't appreciate. incidentally, this wasn't really a thread to debate the "issues" you've brought up, more of a "what are your thoughts and feeling about the recent poll about happy vs. unhappy people?" if you want to debate the NSA program and the "FOREIGN surveilance program" be my guest, but do it in another thread.

Hey, if you're happy, that's great. Good for you. Statistically, polls show that happy people live longer and lead more productive lives. nice to know some people on the other side of the aisle might be doing productive things instead of moaning and developing ulcers.

Indeed. I always found it ironic that dems are bitching about sticking up for the little guy until they are directly affected, then its all protectionism, isolationism and xenophobia
