DO NOT RATE THE GAME UNTIL YOU HAVE FINISHED IT PLEASE.

I say this because I haven't finished it yet, and I have no idea how far through I am, but I've got up to something like chapter 7 or 8, and while it was good, then not so good, it's got better again now, so don't rate it until you have played it through most or all of the way, as the experience does change.

I know this game is released now but I just downloaded the demo the other day. For some reason it just loads up to a black screen and sits there when I try to run it. Any ideas before I download it again in case of a corrupt file?

Try throwing a -w or -window in the shortcut and see if that runs?

I'll give that a try when I get home. It does 'something' before going to the black screen but then it just dies. I think my desktop runs at a res not supported by the game so that could be the problem.

As for the previous question about my hardware specs:

NF7-S
2100+
x800 Pro 256mb
1.5gb PC2700 speed (faster ram but running at 333mhz until I get a barton)

5.09 and 5.1 cats both tried and failed. All other drivers are updated as well.

I'm not a multiplayer, so my entire experience will be of the SP... but so far, it's FREAKING AWESOME. It's like a movie the way things are laid out, the way the story unfolds, and the way scenes or chapters are set up. It's not as scary as i thought it would be, but it has it's moments. I would have liked more variety in the enemies you fight, but the ones that are there, have the best AI i've ever seen. They'll shoot, and you'll round the corner or duck down, then immediately pop back up to take a shot at them, and they'll be gone, circling around you the other way. You tossed a grenade into a room, and if they see it coming, they'll jump out the window. They'll knock down a shelf to take cover behind to shoot you. They'll lay suppressing fire on you, while another enemy would flank you. It's unreal how well the AI is.

Just wondering what settings you guys are playing the game on. I can't get the demo to run at what I consider an acceptable rate without disabling DX9 completely. Maybe a beta driver with FEAR optimizations would help? Makes me not want to buy the game if it won't run at an acceptable rate...

1400x1050 with all high settings... 2.0PM-M with 6800Ultra-Go (iXPS2) and 2GB ram. I tried 1920x1200, but it was just way too taxing.

I played the demo, and now am early in the game, having bought it today.
I gave it an 8/10 at this point. I agree with what Looney said. Just had an interesting shootout with a half dozen AI. Was surprised to see them try to flank me two different ways.
I also like the "feel" of the guns in this game.
And I haven't experienced any of the loading delays within a scene as HL2 had.

What kind of frame rates do you get? I was averaging 22 FPS with my 6800GT and 2.5 GHz A64 and 2 GB of RAM with all the settings maxed and 8XAF and 2XAA. I tested it with the multi-player demo test thing.

I don't have AA on (17" widescreen notebook... i could use some, but i'm happy with what it is atm), just 4xAF. As for performance, very very good. I don't remember specifics atm, but it was something like 0% under 25FPS... 80%25-40... and the rest over 40fps.

Meh... that's not what I consider very good. That's barely mediocre. Very good would be a steady 85 FPS with vsync on. Good with would be a minimum above 50.

Good enough for me. I haven't had a slow down or anything, everything is smooth as butter.

Ummm yes they did.

uhhh... not very much. if you look here some people did and some people didn't.

Ok some did, some didn't. I was only saying that your assertion that it was not released is wrong. It was released.

not gonna run that great with those settings unless you have a FX class proc and a 7800+ GPU..
ive got same rig as you running at 1024 with most things maxed... still only averaging 50 fps.
