Im thinking that getting a nice ~$300 SSD would be a good upgrade to a 3.2ghz q6600. I have a 64gb Corsair SSD now but id like a faster, larger SSD.

Wound up going with an E8400 OC'd to 4.05Ghz air back in the day over the Q6600, as I wanted the better gaming performance and overclockability. It's lasted me well, but Ivy Bridge will probably be what I'll spring for.

I think I'm just gonna pull the trigger on the 2500K+Z68. Ivy Bridge doesn't look like it's worth waiting for anyway.

I've been on the tock cycle of upgrades for a bit. Is Ivy bridge the tock of this cycle? I usually skip a couple whole cycles, preferring to upgrade MB/RAM/etc.

Have had the q6600 for a while now, cpu relegated to torrents, handbrake, surfing, etc so I swapped it out for the E7500 that had been in the HTPC (now that I moved back to Tivo - its combining into one massive serverfest - so the 4 cores will go to good use) - running pyTivo - transcoding rips and TV eps over TO the tivo, and archiving OTA stuff ripped FROM the Tivo, d/l podcasts, serving files, etc.

where is Yorkfield on that list?

I went from Q6600 -> G0 Q6600 -> QX9650 -> god knows how many yorkfields... lol... -> Bloomfield.. errr no my first venture into i7 land was straight up gainestown.

>.<

I went from my q6600 to the new processor of the same sort of price/performance in new gen, the 2500k. I absolutely love it! 4.9ghz oc and it's blazing fast and low power consumption. My q6600 now runs quietly
24/7 as my whs box.

Got myself a new 2500k setup about 2 months ago. I moved from a q6600 @ 3.6ghz, and I could not be more happy with the upgrade. The 2500k is a beast!

I'm interested in seeing how other past and present Q6600 owners feel about the aging chip. I'm planning to replace it when Ivy Bridge comes out, how about other owners?

Edit: Pulled the trigger on a 2500K+Z68. Got a good deal on it that I couldn't pass up. If Ivy Bridge ends up being a lot better, it'll be a simple upgrade anyway.

I did the same thing. I am hoping to do the upgrade this upcoming weekend then update my FS thread 🙂

Q8300 here, planning to get Ivy Bridge (4C/8T K series) as soon as it comes out. Already started saving and picking the parts I can in advance. Even bought my RAM today, since it's currently cheap.

That should be a great upgrade for you. A good IB quad OCd will easily be more than 2x the performance of your current rig. 🙂

I hope this upgrade is worth it, my Q6600 has served me very well.

Same here but my current install of windows is getting slow so its time for a fresh install so if I am going to go through that hassle I might as well do it on new hardware. At least thats what I told my wife 🙂

Haha, that's pretty good reasoning. I'm gonna use this as a chance to flash the firmware on my SSD to get TRIM for a reinstall. Should be a nice upgrade in the end.

I aint getting squat anytime soon. The system in my sig plays everything at pretty decent rates. Granted im only using 21" screens at 1650x1050.

Went from Q6600 to i7 2500K @ 4.3 ghz, 4gb ram to 8gb ram, 7200rpm drive to SSD main drive, noticed a huge difference. Now the Q6600 is a secondary computer, bought a cheap 22" monitor / keyboard / mouse for it and friends can come over and game on that machine. Before the Q6600 I was on the Pentium4 2.4C (3.3 ghz), great line of cpu's for bang for buck.

Went from a Q6600 that was a bad OC'er to a 2600k that run 4.6ghz all day without breaking a sweat. Couldn't be happier.

Ivy Bridge is a tick, you want to want until Haswell if you can.

Went from a Q6600 to a Q9650, making the Q6600 box my server.

I will be waiting for IB-E and will be ditching the Q6600 and the Q9650.

Just retired my old A8N-SLI Premium/Athlon x2 s939 with one of my Q6600 and got 2600k.
Considering to replace the other with 3939k when find somebody to pass who will use it - this baby should get running at least 3+ more years

I just got my new 2500K rig up and running. I'm very impressed so far and I think I made the right choice upgrading from a Q6600.

Don't know. It's still blazingly fast and I'd rather spend the upgrade urge $$ on different toys.

No doubt that the q6600 is still fast, but the 2500k is amazing. I had both on the same SSD and there's a very noticeable difference between the two.
