POLL: PSU type

In lots of posts I have seen people say that it is unwise to go for a modular PSU. I have had 2 modular supplies and both have proven to be excellent performers. The first was an Antec Neopower which was very good on my original athlon 64 system and my newer X2 SLI system has an Enermax liberty which is great, very good cables with plenty of reach and it very quiet as well.

i have a psu from 2003...i'm not sure if there were modular psus out back then. i find nothing wrong with them though so if the price is right, i might get one for a new rig

I think that modular PSUs get a bad name from all the cheap modular PSUs you can find for $10. If you get a quality modular PSU, you have nothing to worry about.

I am currently running an Enermax Liberty 500W. It runs quiet, stable, and is of great quality. I couldn't ask for more. Modular really helps to keep mid-tower cases tidy...

And only 2A less on the +5V from the 620W, how can you beat it?

Given the amount of negative comments about modular supplies on these forums so far this poll seems to indicate that most people actually rather like them.

Lets see if we can get some more results to make it more representative.

Never had any problems with my Hiper Type R 580w modular PSU,stable as a rock,I would use modular again for sure.

over the past few years and the several systems that I have bought and build I have put modular PSU in all of them. Mostly Ultra PSU are what I put in but not many ppl talk about those PSU's. But they Have worked great for me.

I will be joining the modular society when I get hold of my Hiper 580W PSU. Should be good and help to keep the airflow around my case fairly high.

I did.
It wouldn't fit in my case.

That has nothing to do with it being modular or not. Im loving my Hiper Type-R 580. Ive used 3 in total for various builds and all are running perfectly.

Yes it does...
A regular ATX PSU fits fine. The modular connectors stuck out too far and were too high on the PSU so they were blocked by part of the mouting space for the PSU.
It has everything to do with it being modular.

Half right, cases and PSUs have been known to cause problems with sizes even with ATX spec case/PSUs,my case is ATX spec and it fits fine, now do you blame the PSU ,case or ATX spec in your case 😉.

Most manufacturers give dimensions of their PSUs including Hiper, so it is always best to check it fits before buying if you are not sure about your case.

i don't have one. i have this enligh 350W one. i only use the main mobo line and one line for DVD and hdd. so all the other wires i have to stick in with zip ties. a modular PSU would be heavan for me. if only they weren't so expensive.

I won't name my current PSU, but when replaced, I'm seriously considering a modular one (Enermax Liberty 400w).

Does anyone have any experience with Mushkin's 650w modular?

I wish we could get a review of some of the newer high wattage modulars on the market now, they've come a long way since they first hit the market.

Perhaps this is something Anandtech could look into. A roundup of enthusiast level PSUs, both modular and not.
