I never liked the fact that the slim X's had the controls/LCD on the remote -- losing the remote seems to be the perfect way to ruin the thing. I have the original Rio Volt (designed by IRiver) and am perfectly happy with it. Since the Chrome X is cheap and seems like a decent player -- it seems like a good choice.

I am very partial to Sony but i've owned 2 Portable Discmans that both broke on me within the first year. I was in the market for a Mp3/CD player and I narrowed it down to the IRiver slimx Imp 350 and the Sony D-CJ506CK but in the end chose the IRiver and couldn't be happier. I was thinking of buying my mom a new CD Player for Xmas and was thinking about the Sony one.

i can't imagine how one would lose the remote

I lost the wired remote for my Volt some time ago, mind you it was a fairly cheap lcd-less remote, but still...
The remote is just one more thing to lose.
Plus, I find it to be more of a hassle to use the remote than to just use buttons on the face of the player.

Sorry, actually I guess it's like $115 at Amazon.com linky

It's $140, there's a $20 MIR, and I think you can find a $5 Amazon coupon code somewhere, and you can use their free supersaver shipping...so, the cost is $115 (except for tax if there is any)

man, i'm still torn as to what to do. I mean, the 350 is nice, but I wish I could get it down closer to $100. I like the Sony CJ506CK, and wal-mart's got it for $107 right now (linky), and that's got the car kit included. Although, my wife's going to be using it mostly when she's out walking, she won't be using it in the car much, so i'm thinking of the car kit for my own selfish reasons (i keep trying to remind myself that this is a Christmas gift FOR MY WIFE, NOT ME)

ok, i'm partial to the sony name, but I see that the iRiver models have upgradeable firmware, and I'm pretty sure that Sony doesn't do this. Is that alone reason enough to go with the iRiver instead of the Sony?

It's just that this is a gift for my wife, and if she opens it and sees it's a sony, well, then she automatically feels it's a good one. If I get her an iRiver instead, when she opens it, I'm gonna have to explain to her that the iRiver is a good brand, even though she's never heard of it.

whaddaya think?
