I don't think I've ever had to use a "generic" term for pop or soda. I assume I would use one of those two words if it ever came up, but I wouldn't know because I always pay attention to details and order by the actual brand. That's why I'd probably say "Coca-Cola" or "Coke" because it's my brand preference.

I know they serve Pepsi at Taco Bell and Coke products at McDonald's. If I'm not sure, I ask what beverages they have or look at a menu.

Pop when I lived in Vancouver.
Soda now that I live in Philly.
Pop is far superior.

think about this for a second. we're talking about general terms here. when you go to a restaurant, and the waiter says "what would you like to drink", you don't say "soda" or "pop" because they won't know wtf you're talking about. you order by name. it's the same here where we say "Coke." if i'm in a restaurant, and i want sprite, i will say "i'd like a sprite please" just as you would. "Coke" is just our general term to mean unspecified brand. for example, i would say to my friend, "hey man want to go down to the store and get a Coke?" or "its hot, i sure could use a Coke" whereas people in other parts would say the same sentence with "pop" or "soda."

btw, i'm from TX, and i'd say im 75% coke and 25% soda.

Soda.

When people ask me for pop I just stare at them funny until they speak correct English.

Sometimes people here don't know what you're talking about when you want a soda.

It's pop here.

tokamak - Well said.

I guess what annoys me most about "pop" is the accent that go along with it. Some kids at school who moved from Michigan say Pop in the most annoying way possible. "PAAAAWWP". Jesus, no, its not pop. It is Coke for coke, Sprite for sprite, etc. IF you have to be general its either Soft Drink or Soda.
