Poll: Poll: Disabling ACPI in Windows 2000

I'm thinking of trying to set my Win2K PC from ACPI to Standard PC, but there are a few issues that I am considering. The main thing is that my PC's stability is rock solid most of the time, except for the occasional IRQ_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS BSOD when starting up some apps (PowerDVD, Unreal Tournament, Deux Ex). I'm also worried that I may be plagued with the shutdown problem that I have experienced with my 2nd PC, which restarts instead of powering down.

On the other hand, I'm hoping to see a boost in performance in my D3D and OpenGL games by assigning separate IRQs for my various devices instead of having them all share the same IRQ.

I'm sure that many of us would like to know the results too, so please help by participating in this poll to see what your results were when you did the switch yourself.

Thanks!

well it's a pain to switch back and forth because win2k will eventually try to reinstall drivers for all your devices when you switch the kernel. That being said I must say that using the acpi multi processor has kept my pc running much cooler. I've also noticed that I had better FPS and a slight %5 increase in performance when not using acpi. Also how much of a performance decrease do I take when I have three or four devices sharing an irq.

Holden is correct, it's a much better idea to reinstall if you're switching from ACPI to Standard PC HAL...simply swapping in device manager can be met with mixed results. From reading stories here of those who've tried it, it seems to work most of the time. But there have been a few which have had problems ranging from minor instability to being unable to boot the machine.

I reinstalled without ACPI about a month ago and here's how it turned out:

1. much improved responsiveness and stability
2. eliminated a similar IRQ_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS BSOD as you mentioned
3. eliminated distortion from the sound card (occuring when scrolling pages or dragging windows around)
4. better performance from SCSI subsystem

I have not been without my share of problems in Windows 2000, including this GUID issue and this failure to recognize a hard drive. However, neither is related to ACPI...hmm, then why did I just write that? 😱

Floyd

Hi

Well I just switched over to standard Pc through the device manager a few minutes ago. It's worked fine... except now that the machine would refuse to shut down automatically requiring me to hit the power button.

I disabled ACPI in the BIOS and enabled APM but still the same problem. Wondering how I can make the machine shut itself down again. Or is it one of the problems mentioned before associated with switching through device manager??

Any help is greately appreciated ^^

Tried installing legacy apm support but still doesn't work.... Also tried all possiable combination of ACPI / APM (on/off) under BIOS but still no good.....

Anyone else that simply did a driver switch in device manager have the same problem??

What is the command to install from scratch (clean install) WITHOUT ACPI??
Where do you get to pick this option?

If I had a nickel for ....

When setup prompts "Press F6 to install additional SCSI or RAID drivers", you can switch to Standard PC HAL in one of two ways:

1. Press F7 and it will silently trigger the change (no message confirmation)

2. Press F5 and a screen will pop up where you can select the HAL mode from a list.

Best regards,
Floyd

What's so good about Standard PC over the usual ACPI system that win2k installs? I'm currently using ACPI and everything seems to be okay, except for my vortex2 card not working and forcing me to get a sb live! Well then there is the fact that i use to be able to run at 933 and no wI can only do 868 and its not that stable either.

WOW! I just came here looking to see what everybody thoughts was on disabling ACPI because i'm having a sh1t load of trouble with it right now. Thanks for the confidence that i'm not the only one doing this.

FWIW, my Dell OptiPlex GX110 (i810-based) was installed as ACPI when I put Win2K on it. I have had no hardware problems with a SCSI card (no devices), second video card, and second sound card added (everything else is on the mobo).

My home box based on a Soyo 6BA+IV is not ACPI-compliant ... at least it the BIOS wasn't when I installed Win2K in January. It may be compliant now. Regardless, I have 4 PCI cards and 1 AGP and no hardware problems.

If you cant shutdown after switching to Standard PC read the Windows 2000 Tips and Tricks thread.... I posted the fix on Page 2 of the thread.

Enabling ACPI won't give you outright blatent anamolies or errors in my opinion and i cant compare performance as i didnt not stay with acpi long enough to measure it but I myself re-installed win2k pro without acpi enabled because i was getting some weird happenings myself with it enabled. My pc go into what would look like suspend mode and not be able to come out of it on its own. There would be serious lags when going to the start menu and attempting to access the control panel. Some sound glitches here and there. Since I had a fairly fresh win2k OS installed on a dual boot i decided to just re-install without acpi and these problems have seemed to have gone away. But there are people who have had no problems supposedly with it enabled. But if it isnt too much of a problem to disable it or re-install and you dont think you'll run into any type or irq conflicts, i'd reccomend installing it without acpi enabled just so you can have a better peace of mind. You wont have to worry when something gets screwy and constantly wonder if acpi could be the problem. Just my 2 cents.

ive noticed a nice performance increase after disabling ACPI and so I always recommend that everyone do it.

Hmmm...can someone please explain in a little more detail again how to install win 2k with ACPI disabled from the get go??

BJ

When it says Press F6 to install SCSI/RAID Drivers at the bottom of the screen press F5 instead and it will let you change it to Standard PC.

bjassin, maybe you should try opening your eyes. The answer is four posts above your question, and immediately after the first time you asked the same thing. :| What more is there to explain?

Well, i successfully installed Win2k without ACPI, and everything is working fine! Maybe it's the chipset? I'm running Win2k with ACPI on a PIII BX without any problems, but on my Athlon and Epox 7KXA (Via KX133) i had problems.
