I voted Stairway. I would have gone with Comfortably Numb had it been there though.

Oh, and Jagger considers Gimme Shelter to be the best Stones song.

Oh lord almost all old-people songs. ;) j/k but...

<-- 25 and haven't heard of most of them.

Most good songs were written before you were born.
Seriously.
There are of course some exceptions, Jane's Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Phish, and a few others.
I'm sure you're right about older songs being better (to the general listening public) than today's music... but it's just the style I like ... I DETEST all of those bands you listed except for Nirvana (on the fence) and some Pearl Jam. Those other bands come on the radio, I turn it off... just like I do for Ja Rule or P Diddy.

For the last ... umm... 10 years, I've been listening to MetallicA (no comments, please, I'm sick of all the repetitive drivel) and just recently Iced Earth (thanks Eli). I have heard "old-people songs" when I lived with my dad (not that I could identify them by ear) and the style just doesn't suit me. Back in 8th grade, I even did a report on "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder. The Monkeys, CCR, Beatles (I made him a mix CD), etc. just don't do it for me... so I don't think attempting to expand my mind would help in this poll.

Honestly, maybe even a one-hit wonder would top my list if I really thought about it.

Just my 2 cents (did that ever buy a record ?) ... :D

Yeah, how could you dare forget "I'm full of crap" by *insert crappy local/obscure band* that song is so much better than all the ones you listed despite the fact that they've sold millions of more copies and helped define an entire genre of music :disgust:

anyways...

I'd have to say Yesterday by the Beatles. (closely followed by God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, but that's not listed) That song is just absolutely timeless, it's lyrics are genius in their simplicity yet they never fail to deliver their message.

and there's a very good reason pink floyd is not listed. They don't have nearly as broad appeal as the artists/songs given. Yes, they were talented, groundbreaking, and unique. But they lacked that undefinable quality necessary to propel them into the realm of "great" artists. Unfortunately, that's common with progressive artsts. Pink Floyd, Steely Dan (more jazzy than progressive), Emerson, Lake and Palmer, were all quite popular in their time, yet they're not hailed as greats in the world of retrospect. Why? Because beauty in simplicity is much more palatable than beauty in complexity.

Then you go on to say:

(closely followed by God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, but that's not listed)
And then, regarding Pink Floyd:

But they lacked that undefinable quality necessary to propel them into the realm of "great" artists.
You are aware thet 'The Dark Side of the Moon' is still on the Billboard 200, right? It's the longest any release has been on the list.

Seems silly to me for you to complain about other people suggesting songs not on the list, when you thought it was important for you to do so.

Again Pink Floyd gets the shaft.

Nice thread though, looks like you spent a lot of time on it:)

ok, first of all my local/obscure band comment was not directed at people making legitimate suggestions (even Pink Floyd), but rather those who would suggest some song by a band 90% of us have never heard of (e.g. My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel, or Ken Hirai - Miracles to name 2 that have already been suggested). Besides which, I did not say I thought that "God Only Knows" should be put on the list, I said it follows a close second to Yesterday. The poll was for the best, not the second-best.

And about Pink Floyd, yes, I am fully aware of their chart position. I'm also aware that Dark Side of the Moon had fallen off the charts until someone made the Wizard of Oz connection. Besides, I'm not saying they're bad. Far from it, I actually rather enjoy their music. However, nobody (outside of their most rabid fans, of course) would place them in the same catagory as The Beatles, Elvis, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, or Bruce Springsteen. It all comes down to influence. Everybody (in the civilized world, at least) has heard of the beatles and elvis. And most could probably recognize one of either artist's songs. Pink Floyd just doesn't have that.

good point. Pink Floyd was never a 'song' band anyway.
