At the end of Tomshardware.com's article on WinHEC 11, the author writes:

PC gaming is dead; long live PC gaming

I don't know if this somewhat of a prophetic vision, but in my opinion PC gaming is very much alive. I do think though, that within a decade we'll be moving away from our computers to VR or something like that. Any opinions?
 
PC gaming is definitely not dead. Look at some of the games out there. I still go to PC Gaming places to play Counter-Strike every once in awhile, and the place is always packed. I highly doubt PC gaming is going away anytime soon.
 
So long as people find everyday life less than satisfactory, there will be a need for games. PC gaming is, what, 20-25+ years old now? It's changed over the years but it won't die. It's just too cool. 🙂
 
PC gaming is here to stay ,as long as I`m alive & gaming it will never die 😉 . PC gaming is always evolving into something bigger and better.

I think the x-box will have a shorter life-span than the 3DO.
 
PC Gaming will never die but I do think it will grow more into a niche market, It will gradually appeal more and more to the Tech savy or (Geeky) of society. I would say most Anand'ers probably fit that catergory. There are alot of people who don't want to have to worry about, having the right OS/Hardware/Bandwidth etc. They just want to go home with a new game plug it into a console and be up and playing it one minute later. I on the other hand love to tinker with my hardware, try new Mods, Skins. I don't think you can compare Pc gaming to console gaming, They are related but yet they are very differn't.

Yes you have to upgrade your computer every 18 months to play the best games (or more if you are a tech geek and want the best FPS). But consoles only last 2-3 years before something better comes along, so its not that much difference. Sure there are still new games for the PS1 but they suck graphics wise and are very slow. For instance, I played NFL Fever 2002 on the playstation at BB the other day, and it took a good 45 seconds between each play just to load the play screen and then load the field and players again. Took me forever just to finish one game, and thats not cool.
 
Until console gaming can match the pc's multiplayer ability, there isn't the slightest chance of pc gaming going anywhere. Even then I bet it will stay around.
 
I certainly think PC gaming is here to stay, it is an escape to the everyday reality, like JellyBaby said. 😉 Its just too fun! 🙂
 
It's the same as it's always been, not dead but by no means booming. We see a few good titles on the computer every year or two, other than that computer gaming is kinna stale for the most part.
 
How the hell anyone can claim that PC gaming is going to die is completely beyond me. Take a look around you.

It's quite the opposite really: games are becoming more complex and realistic and more and more resources are being devoted to developing them.

i think it's interesting that more people don't think that PC gaming will be replaced in the future (keep in mind that i never said that it had to be the game console that would be doing the replacing). yes, it's an escape from reality, but pc gaming is just one method to escape - it's limited in many respects, predominantly in the interactive factor. alot of people will disagree, but remember that you only use two of your senses in pc (and console) gaming, sight and sound (and no, touching your mouse doesn't count!) . what about a way of escaping reality, but bringing all five of your senses along for the ride?
 
You don't want a product that reacts with all 5 of your senses. Didn't you watch lawnmower man damnit?!?! 😀

Recall where computers were 10 years ago. Now realize you can't even guess where they will be in 10 more years. But even as that may be, I see the best candidate for games in the future to be a PC. Even a VR machine would likely be run by a PC if one were ever to come out.

The fact is that PC games are created for a person who can sit at a desk with 110 keys at their use and still feel comfortable. Nothing but another desktop machine would be able to replace that functionality. Even if you give a console a keyboard, I don't want to type from my bed nor sit 3 feet from my TV.

The only thing that will eventually replace the PC of now is the PC of the future.
 
Seems to me that you missed the historical reference : "The king is dead, long live the king"
it was shouted when the king died to show that although the king was dead the idea of royalty kept going on, even if it was under a different king.
Thus this quote has nothing to do with PC gaming "dying" anytime soon but more with PC gaming remaining as strong as ever, albeit under a different form.

if that was the intendend meaning, then it was a bad choice for a phrase; yeah those loyal to the throne persisted, as did their ideals (for hundreds of years). but where are king's now? relegated to very meager insignificant positions, if present at all. (of course not the case in all countries, but most). another factor is that in this case you're talking about political ideologies - something that doesn't change very easily. my loyalty to my p.c. doesn't go beyond the convenience, comfort, and fun it gives me. show me something better and i'm all over it.
 
PC gaming will live on. I stopped buying consoles, not because the PC is better (even tho it is) but because I have too many damned consoles! I stay with the PC besause I can upgrade the same box over and over and over without it taking up anymore room than it already does. I have about 10 console cluttering up my desk right now. Plus, I am into good FPS and although they are also on consoles I cannot play these games with a freaking gamepad. I need the W,S,A,D of a keyboard and deinately need the trackbal that only the PC gives me, at least for the moment. I couldn't give a rats ass about online gaming as I have no need for it. LAN gaming is more to my liking and I can rig all my pcs and invite several friends over and have a good time.
