Do you see the world through an optomist's, pessimist's, or realist's eyes and why?

Realist here. Guess it is just the Scientist in me abd besides, bright, bouncy people get on my nerves. Gloom and doomers I just ignore

Mostly realist, but occasionally I slip into optimist mode. Positive attitude really does seem to help improve some situations, so I realistically use that dynamic to my advantage. ;)

I think I'm pessimistic and I want to change the way I view life. Thinking the worst all the time sucks.

In basic Psych, one of the things we are taught to look out for is the negative triad...

"I suck, everything sucks, and it's always gonna suck!"

When you get caught in that trap of negative thinking, you lose all the pleasure in life. Some people have to retrain themselves to think more positively or else they wallow in a mire all the time.

Try thinking: I may not be satisfied with my life at the moment, but I can still find small things to enjoy and I can set positive, reasonable goals.

edit: :D theBestMax... You know me too well!

depends:
if i'm comforting a friend, optomist, if i'm thinking to myself, pessimist. if you never get your hopes up, you can never be dissapointed.

There's a difference between pessimism and realism? I almost always plan for the worst, no sense leaving things to chance. That said, I don't necessarily always expect the worst, but I still plan for it. I'd say that I'm a realist with pessimistic leanings.

<< Wasn't "hope" what was in Pandora's Box?? >>

Heh... ready for a stupid poem I wrote in the 7th grade (20 years ago!)

Pandora's Box

Loneliness and Emptiness
Jealousy and Pain
All these things are known to me
Along with Grief and Shame
Yet deep inside I still have Hope
As small as it might seem
Hope will keep me 'til the dawn
And lead me to my dreams

(It's okay, you can flame me on it. I know it is pretty gooey. I was 13!)

Well said Isla :)

I myself am a optomist.
Heck, with Windows operating system, one MUST be an optomist to survive ;) :D

I am an optimistic realist. Survival as a small business owner requires both philosophies.

I'm a realist with pessimistic tendencies. :-D The main reason somebody is called a realist is because they face the bad things that are going to happen even when they don't want to. A pessimist looks at the bad side of everything even when there's a good side. I tend to believe that as long as I'm prepared for the worst thing possible to happen, I can't be disappointed, but I can be pleasantly surprised. Optimists can be let down all the time, but if anything good happens all they can say is "that's what I expected".

Incidentally: optimist is the correct spelling. :) I'm also anal retentive and annoying.

Optimistic realist. As a scientist you need to be a little of both!!!!!!

Optimistic that you can attack a problem and solve it but realistic that it almost ALWAYS is a struggle to reveal nature's secrets.

The "death and destruction" crowd grate on me.
