i have an optical trackball for everyday windows use and i also have a mouse connected to the same computer for when i play FPS games
 
I think most people will have the optical due to the coolness factor. Because I have an optical (logitech), it is therefore cool.
 
Logitech Optical here, it's just okay. It's the same size and shape as my old Logitech ball mouse, but I miss the weight of the ball in there.:Q The red light is kind of annoying too at times.
 
Kensington Expert Mouse rulez! The ball that comes with it is exactly the same size as a standard cue ball! Sitting next to my black and grey NEC keyboard it looks so cool with the 8 ball sitting in it and it is very precise. Plus, the software is extrememly customizable and the cursor leaps to the deault prompt on every page, both left buttons are "click", top right is "right click", bottom right is "double click" and both bottom buttons together are "scroll".
 
Optical all the way.
Kicks so much ass in comparison to track cause you don't have to clean it as often!
