OK I have two computers One running and one I am building that are of concern here.

I have a an intel D845PEBT2 that has onboard sound and an intel d850GB that also has onboard sound.

I also have a Monster MX300 Vortex sound card. (hey it was Hot back in the day)

As I do the swaping that is required to make two good computers I am stuck with this question.

Should I use the onboard sound or keep using the Mx300.
I will be using the newer board D845PEBT2 w/ a 2.53

The wife get the D850Gb w/ a 1.7 (retail edge rox)

SO what should I do about sound. I am using altec lansing speaker set-ups.

holy crap, you still have one of those MX300's? I remember getting that way back in the day with my oc'd celery 300a. Once Aureal died and support died for win2k, I gave it to the 'rents. I sure wish aureal were still here today...

MX300 r0x0rs! I kept that sound card for a good 3 years before getting my Audigy. Worked without a hitch in Win2k and WinXP

I've actually have had problems with the half-assed drivers that MS put in XP. They were butchered and didnt work right with the newer games, but the old win2k drivers from the Vortex of Sound did...

I disagree. I don't use anything but headphones and the onboard Creative sound on my Gigabyte board is more than adequate.

Edit - Also, why waste a pci slot on an ethernet card?

Hmm.. Onboard Lan works great.

Onboard usually suffers compared to real cards BUT we are talking about a four/five year old card here;)

Loved my MX300 when I had it, just had the VIA chipset conflict so had to unload it.

Bleh.

The onboard audio on my NForce is pretty respectable. Oh...and nearly every single user in my office has onboard video and sound. OH THE AGONY!!!!

It's all in what you need it for. If you just wanna play a cd every now and then, and hear the standard windows dings and beeps, onboard sound is fine. Also, if you are just using some craptastic $10 headphones or speakers, you'll never be able to tell difference anyway between onboard sound and a $200 sound card.

There is a fix for that. I had to ditch my card for about a year when I went to the Via chipset with my P3.

I didn't sell it though and Now I am using it in my P4 setup

Huh? Onboard LAN is fine, and the new nForce 2 sound is state of the art, not to mention C-Media 5.1 audio, which has been around for more than a year and is more advanced than an MX300.

I've had a couple NFORCE chipset mobo's, they sound excellent, or at least no worse than my SBLIVE. but maybe my ears are shot.
