Hm.......hard decision, since I have a really kick ass desktop I would have to say laptop. But I would try to get both.

i'm going to college this fall, i got a kick ass desktop now, i think i might upgrade a few things on it before college, and im going to try to get my parents to chip in on a modest laptop for me. But if i could only have one or the other, its gotta be the desktop. Power is the key, no lappy can match a decent desktops performance, you cant get 100GB hdds and get the full use out of that T3 connection with a laptop. The main reasons i want a laptop are to take notes in class, i hate writing stuff on paper, and to take stuff wherever i go. Go Desktop :)

You're going to change your mind when you see how POSITIVELY PUNY your desk will be:)

Desktop + 19" monitor = walking your ass to the library to study
Laptop = comfort of doing your simple math assignments in the comfort of your own room.

Really though..I wish I had a desktop to play all the cool new games...but my roommate has a P4 1.8GHZ/GF3/Klipsch 4.1 system that I can play games on any time I want:) It all works out in the end I 'spose:)

i used to play games a lot my first quarter of college like when q3a and UT came out on a k6-2/400 to boot. But well 99% of games suck now, so i stopped playing. I think what forced me to stop playing games, was when q3a came out, and i realized that ID is supposedly one of the best game companies adn well q3a sucks as a game, its a great 3d renderer. anyways getting back on topic

i came to school an upgrading freak finally reaching the pinnacle of my desktop ness at a 1ghz athlon with a radeon by then end of my 2nd year. Sold it and i have an ultralight subnote now.

Warcraft3 might be tempting but i think it'll run on my subnote, so i'll live.

I would definitely buy a notebook. One its smaller and they are also a lot cheaper now when i started school 2 years ago, there was a much bigger gap, now you can get a 1ghz notebook for like $900 and you wont be that much slower than a desktop. and a lot of the new desktop replacement ones are fast enough for games. also it'll keep you from playing games as much i guess, then you can go and have an at actual life. its really convenient if you go back and forth from home a lot (me almost every week) and also if youw anna study with a group somewhere or give a presentation (ive done both of those with my laptop)

if you just wanna play games, but want a laptop for notes. go on ebay. find a toshiba portege 7010ct. they cost about $250 and are p2-300 subnotes , and plenty for notes and stuff if you run like win98 on them . thenjust shave off $250 on your desktop which can easily be done (i.e. get a gf3 ti200 instead of a radeon 8500 dv or a tradeoff like that almost coveres it all). then you can make a pretty good compromise

buy a good desktop, desktops are cheap. then buy a second hand or ultra cheap laptop, they exist now, seriously what are you going to be using it for? typing.. yes thats right,, how fast a laptop do you need to run word? maybe an mp3? unless your kidding yourself and want to play games on the laptop too, an old laptop for a couple hundred bux and a decent desktop works. unless your rich then buy both:)

Most people I know w/laptops don't really move their computer around that much unless it's for taking notes in class....and those f*ckers are annoying as hell.

I've had desktops all through college and never wanted a laptop

I'd take a laptop over a desktop any day. For one thing, I hate the feeling of being confined to a single room to do all my work. Also, laptops are considerably quieter which really helps my train of thought when engaged in research projects. I wouldn't be caught dead trying to write reports next to my hair-dryer sounding desktop rig.

Besides, if you get an Insprion 4100/8100 series, they do have pretty good 3d graphic cards that are completely satisfactory for the occasional game playing so I don't see that as an issue. If you want to play games all day at 1600x1200, then get the ultimate desktop but do yourself a favor by staying home instead of heading off to school.

I bought a laptop for college and watched as everyone came with faster desktops. And I couldn't upgrade. And I paid waaaaaaaaaaaay too much. So finally 2nd semester of my senior year I built myself a desktop. Cost $600 whereas my laptop was over $3000 :(

remember laptops aren't silent, so if the class is quiet with no other ppl usinglaptops your gonna be a big asshole for using em. fans really blow.

and getting a loaded laptop is asking for trouble, unless you have a 4 year warrantee:p the stress of carrying your one and only computer around and safe..not good
