Poll: need more avatars

I'm content with the current selection, but wouldn't complain if they added more (I'd like to see some sort of puffer fish if they do put more in, though!). 🙂

At one time they were having a contest where users could submit avatars for consideration, but apparently that didn't attract much attention, and I've never heard any more about it for quite a while. 🙁

none of those have .... a poll! 🙂 Well I guess I should've read those... but looks like nobody cares for more avatars except for me. Oh well.

I don't see why on Anandtech forums you can't download your own small avatar like on numerous others including Extreme Overclocking Forums. Also, i'd like to see the option of a flag denoting your nation so i can see who's from the UK, and where everyone else is from.

I imagine it's a combination of bandwidth, keeping control of what the avatars are, and... um... cheese. (yeah, that's the ticket)

For the people that want extreme customization power, I could see a setup where you (on the client side) could alter what the avatars look like, but I don't lose sleep over it.

this should be a new subscriber benefit, either being able to upload one that is about the same size as the existing avatars or a link to your OWN image (one on your server) as an avatar. If that image is 404 then default to one on the AT server. How hard is that?

We're all apathetic about it since its been shot down so many times in the past.

I vote no until Anand gets his stuff together about this subscriber mumbo jumbo and tells us what is really going on.

They can't even give us an answer on whether the subscriber service is going to be continued.
This place is going downhill fast.

I wouldn't say the place is going downhill. I will sorely miss the subscriber benefits if (when) the go away. The forums are just a sidebar to the real reason the site exists - the content. Hardware reviews, industry news and so on.

The forums were (and sometimes still are, but it's getting more rare) an excellent resource for tech information. When someone posts a legitimate question/plea for help and gets multiple "Stop posting", "n00b", etc. replies, it tends to lessen any benefits from the site.

I guess I'm just not coherent and I am babbling. OK, it is going downhill. 😕

compudog, it seems to me like there has actually been some improvement in the usefulness of the forums. I remember when I started visiting the Motherboards forum. It was populated by sad, forlorn threads that often faded into oblivion without any replies. Now it's filled with lots of great threads, including official mobo-specific ones, and almost everyone gets lots of good advice crammed down their throat 😀

Richdog, think about what this place would look like if it were filled with animated GIFs :Q That alone is probably a good enough reason they don't allow 110000+ people to choose their own avatars, not to mention the other inevitable abuses we can all envision. Ok, to be fair, I did ask Zuni once if he would set me up with my special Cheetah avatar that blinks about once every 20 seconds 🙂)🙂🙂 Zuni? 🙂🙂🙂).

More flag icons would be pretty cool, though. 🙂

jliechty... puffer fish, eh? 🙂

Having lurked here for years, I really have to agree with Compudog. Perhaps it's the inevitable result of population explosion, but AT is no longer a place for high-level discussion. It has devolved into just another newbie haven, like ABXZone. If cutting off subscribers is a move to thin the herd, then they are partway to a solution. Sadly, they will be thinning the wrong end of the spectrum. I'd like to see the forums go subscription-only, I would certainly pay a few bucks a month if I knew much of the chaff had been disposed of.

"Chaff?"

If you want a more-technical discussion level, check out the forums at Ace's Hardware. Personally, I like newbies and don't mind helping them (as my post count might reveal).

bring me your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free

mechBgon-

Sorry, I dodn't mean "chaff" in terms of people, but the crap that's cluttering up the forums. Namely, Politics and OT. All these forums do is generate arguments and bad feelings that sometimes spill over into the hw forums.

And I don't have a problem with newbies either, but there needs to be a new class-the one who is so utterly clueless that "buy a Dell" is good advice and not an insult. I recall a few months ago in motherboards one like that showed up, and you tried to help him. But he was so far beyond help that it ended with you requesting that he be banned. That's the sort of person nobody needs.

By the way, is that the guy where I ended up busting a rhyme at him? I think he's still around 😀

Elite9 put it the way I could not.

And mech, you have helped me out more times than I can count. Whether directly or via a post of yours. As for n00bs, we all have to start somewhere, I don't mind lending assistance where I can. It was posted further up in this thread that the place has "gone downhill." I guess I agree to some extent, yet I feel as though I need to defend AT to any and all detractors.

Again, I am babbling. I think you get my point though.

Maybe a longer contest... like 2 months and each one gets added to the list upon approval. At the end of the two months, the five that were most used, are then added.
