Yao will win ROY, unless Amare has an AMAZING last month, IMO.
David Stern probably wants Yao to win too....good for Chinese interest in the NBA.
yes, he is. but let's not say it as if he didn't deserve it. Chinese interest. local interest all are important to the NBA, but Yao is definitely one of the top 2 or 3 rookies in the NBA this year. in my opinion he deserves it as much as anyone else in the league.

Okay Rookie of the year has nothing to do with potential. Rookie of the year goes to the best rookie and Amare Stoudamire has played atleast twice as well as Yao. Yoa has shown some signs of life but Stoudamire brings life to the game when he plays. We will see if Yoa can hang in the NBA but as long as he is getting boxed out by guys that are 6' 9" he isn't gonna be a dominant force. Granted I think Yao has the mental game down, and may eventually be a better player than Amare, this year he has failed to prove that he is the ROY.

twice as well? yao is leading stoudamire all the major categories except boards, plus houston is 3-1 vs. phoenix and is in the 8 spot in the west.
you're talking out of your ass.
seriously though both players are doing way better than expected this year, and i'll bet chicago is lamenting their pick of jwill. yao will probably win it because he's better with the media than amare. i wonder if it will come down to who gets the last playoff spot in the west. it's interesting noone mentions butler for ROY because he plays on a super sucky team.
In the long run, yes, Yao Ming will be better than Amare Stoudemire, but Amare's effectiveness was better this season. You can bring up stats and all that, but one team is in the playoffs, the other isn't.

Uhmm... does that article even mean anything?
It was conducted by some paper (is it a local AZ paper? biased maybe?).
EDIT: East Valley Tribune is a paper local to the Phoenix area.
WTF?? I'm appalled that ESPN would even publish that sh!t.
Talk about biased, wtf do you think AZ residents are going to vote for???
Isn't ROY decided by league officials or coaches?
NBA.com had their own poll recently and Yao was dominating the votes by FAR.
I've watched some Houston games and the reason they didn't get into the playoffs is because Houston is not as deep as Phoenix, and they rarely ran plays around Yao (granted Yao was not as dominating inside as well - missed many many post up/inside moves).
Whenever Francis or Mobley could/did not penetrate, they resorted to the jump shot which is bad because they're not that good of an outside shooting team.
Poor poor coaching on Rudy T's part.
Amare is nothing but an outstanding leaper and hustler, all out athleticism, which is sometimes good enough to win.
He needs to develop a consistent shot or some kind of offensive move.
Until then, he cannot be dominant in this league, if he relies on others to make him better (alley oops, rebounding dunks).
Yao is more skill, finesse and talent.
He is a franchise type player because he has an offensive game - he draws double teams, face the basket, post you up and will have the team's offense run around him.
MESA, Ariz. -- Amare Stoudemire will win the NBA's rookie of the year award, according to a survey by the East Valley Tribune.
The newspaper reported Tuesday that with more than 70 percent of the voters responding, the Phoenix Suns forward had an insurmountable lead over Houston Rockets center Yao Ming.
The newspaper said 49 voters had Stoudemire first, to 31 for Yao. Miami forward Caron Butler had 11 first-place votes.
All 91 of those responding had Stoudemire either first or second on their ballots, while Yao was picked third by 19 voters. A player receives five points for a first-place vote, three for second, and one for third.
Even if Yao finished first and Stoudemire second on the remaining 35 ballots, Stoudemire still would win, the newspaper concluded.
Mike Tulumello, the reporter who did the survey, said he had heard from even more voters Tuesday and their comments reinforced the conclusion that Stoudemire would win.
Stoudemire would be the third Phoenix Suns player to win the award, following Alvan Adams in 1976 and Walter Davis in 1978. He would be the first player to come directly from high school and win the honor.

Please show me where it says that.
Or am I just overlooking it?
Nowhere do I see where it says folks responsible for voting for the NBA postseason awards.
Seems more like an informal poll conducted locally to me![]()

If the NYtimes, WSJ, USAtoday, or ESPN did that poll I'd say its probably of real voters. But this "East Valley Tribune" (wherever the heck that is) doesn't really inspire me to think amare will win.

MSNBC, ESPN, etc., have all picked up on the story . . .
SAN ANTONIO - Amare Stoudemire has won the coveted 2003-04 NBA rookie-of-the-year award, according to a survey of the award's voters by the Tribune. With more than 70 percent of the voters responding, the Suns forward leads the much more high-profile Houston Rockets center Yao Ming, 49-31 in first-place votes.
Now, ask yourself - why the hell would ESPN run this story if it were a poll of random fans?
